It is a sad state of affairs when a secular military takeover could be seen as being preferable to an increasingly Islamised elected government, particularly when that government has aspirations of joining the EU.

There's not much else he can do. He can hardly defend a military coup, even if the incumbent regime is no more agreeable than a military junta, and with the way Turkey is currently entangled with Europe over the migrant crisis, ISIS and the war in Syria he can hardly do a Ronald Reagan either and declare publicly that its a shame they can't both lose. He is reduced to making non-committal diplomatic noises and awaiting events, same as the rest of us, which is what he has done.
