Hi Folks, not sure what could be causing the following so I thought I'd ask for your opinions. Basically there is a vibration that starts to become noticeable after about ten miles or so of riding. I use a mix of 'A' Roads, Dual Carriageways and Motorways on my commute to and from work so the speeds and gear positions vary. Don't get me wrong, there isn't a massively large vibration as if the bars or bike are going to shake themselves to bits but there is something there that manifests itself after about 10 miles or so. The longer I go the more my hand starts to feel it. Its annoying to say the least. I'd always thought that twins would be more prone but this has only recently become noticeable. Its a 2015 DVT S with 3560 miles on the clock. I'd appreciate your thoughts or any tips on what to check. Its probably going back to the dealership in a couple of weeks for a couple of things so I thought I'd ask you lot before it goes in. Many thanks, Lee.
Not sure what this could be. Can you give us some more details on the vibes i.e. are they high or low frequency, heavy or light? Do they vary with engine speed, road speed, neither or both? And it only appears after 10 miles? Or is it there all the time and you only notice it after 10 miles? Does it go away after more miles, get worse or better etc?
My guess is get out of the habit of possibly using high gears at low speeds. The thing will thumb about like a tractor if you don't use a low gear at low speed, especially around 4-5k revs. How long have you had the bike? My hands had to get use too the vibrations of a big-twin Lee.
I had a slight vibration from new - I am very susceptible to vibration and numb hands. I filled my mirrors with silicone to stop it vibrating and add mass and I removed the bar end weight / handguard, measured up and made a small packet of lead shot - between bolts for end plugs and heat shrink for the tube and packed the Heat Shrink Tube with lead shot, fitted the second bolt and shrunk it down - then rammed that in the handle bar - replaced the hand guard bar end. Its much better - but not perfect. Maybe worth a try?
Hi Tobers, I'm inclined to think that its there all the time but then becomes more noticeable as my ride time increases. Cant honestly say they vary with engine speed or road speed/conditions. I'd say they are high frequency and light, hence the slight tingling sensation you start to get across the palm of the hand. Lee.
When I first got my DVT, I thought that there was a bit more vibration through the bars than my previous Multistradas. I also thought the grip diameter felt smaller. Anyway, I quickly fitted a pair of Grip Puppies which helped a lot with "hand comfort". Just replaced them at 7,000 miles as one had started to split. Didn't seem to make too much difference to the heated grips, which appear to be less effective than on previous models anyway.
Hmmm...difficult to figure this one out. You say it's just one hand? Right or left? I'm guessing right hand? Could be something simple like the throttle tube vibrating against the bar due to a bit of free play. If it drives you crazy you could change the grips as suggested above, or maybe fit a Renthal Twinwall bar which has vibe isolators between the central portion of the bar and the grip areas.
Hi Tobers, yep, its the right hand. I'll give that area a closer inspection tonight as I'm fitting some crash ends to the bars anyway. I'll bear in mind the Grip Puppies and also the Renthal Bars.
Got grip puppies on mine also, just remember to adjust the clutch lever slightly if fitted for the bite point which will be further out from grip.
I have also struggled with the vibrations. I had just assume it was me though. I spent last weekend in Wales riding some great roads, and experienced the vibrations throughout the trip. It seems to be in the 3-5k rpm range, 2-4th gears. Although I also struggled on the motorway while cruising at 80 in top. I'm back at Rapido next weekend to sort my ill fitting seat, so will add that to the list (along with my electrical issue - management light, intermittent low power, battery starting problem). is it the same with different gloves on ? I find it gets worst with my tight summer gloves and was told it could be because the tips of my fingers are touching the inside of the glove. You know the nipple bit inside the finger ends. I've tested this and if I slide the gloves off just slightly it seems to lessen the sensation.
You know Hoonigan you may well be onto something re summer gloves. Thinking about it I've only recently started wearing some new summer gloves. So, i'll try my thicker gloves next time I'm out and see what happens.
On a few sports and sports tourer's I thought it was the leaning forward pressure on the hand. Now I've got more of a sit up in the Multi I expected less or non at all. Like you it starts after about 10 miles and yep sure enough on the Multi too so it appears it's more my hand than any particular bike. Heavier bar end weights sometimes helps and surprisingly, rubber strips around the bars where they are attached to the handlebar mounts on the yoke sometimes also has helped in the past.
Hi had a long look as I have a similar problem with my monster1200, right hand only. The bore of the bar is 14 mm, the same as the inside of a piece of 15mm domestic copper pipe. I have ordered some lead shot on flea bay. I am going to plug of the base of the pipe fill with shot and melt it with a blow lamp, topping up with shot until full, this should leave a lead rod of appropriate size to insert in the bar. I will drill and tap the end m8 so I can remove if needed. I will let this post know how it goes.
I've heard filling the bars with silicone works but never tried it myself. I try not to grip the bars too tightly. I also find resting my index and next finger on the levers helps a lot as does thicker gloves. Gripping the bike with your knees and engaging your core makes a big difference too.
I had similar issue, however worked out that after an accident I was gripping the throttle too tight as I was too tense, relaxed and problem went away.
I’m not saying I suffered with vibration from the bars but it was noticeable. The heavier Evotech bar ends were a great improvement.
The only place I noticed any vibration was through my nads. Despite 10,000 hours in the saddle now - it is still there
