Hi, I'm looking clear number plate lense (the housing is ok but fitted with a blank at the moment), for my 2003 999. If anyone has one spare for sale I, would be interested. Regards, Mark.
Are you converting your rear plate hanger to use the top 'blanked' number plate light housing instead of the lower one? If so just slide the clear lense from the bottom one and install in the top one!
I'm fitting a EVOTECH Performance 5254 TailTidy - Fender Eliminator. It comes with the bits to fit a bulb - I'v fitted the bulb hangers to the lower housing ready for the bulb. I need to use the lower number plate light The old set-up has a blank plate on the lower housing. A clear piece is what I need. Regards, Mark.
There should be two number plate light housings on a 749/999. One that sits down by the plate and a top one thats next to the rear light, as in your photo above. I think the top one was used for the American spec bikes. The clear lense from the bottom light housing is a straight swap for the top housings plastic blank. If you only have one housing on your current set up, then a previous owner has already done the common mod of losing the lower housing and using the top one. The lense isn't available as a part, the whole housing has to purchased, part number 525.1.019.1A, they are about £20 from a dealer. This is the best picture I can find of an unmolested rear set up showing the standard twin number plate light housings.
Fantastic, Thanks Shaun that pic explains everything written in the EVOTECH fitting instructions. I could not get my head round them describing it has "two rear number plate lights piggy-backed". My bike only had the one, which is blanked-out, therefore I need the clear lense. Or do I? Could it work without using the lower light. I may talk to the guy who MOT's it. I may be doing something that is not required as I very rarely ride at night and the rear light is on permenantly anyway. Thanks agaib Shaun.
Firstly, you'll need the plate plate light probably to pass an MOT but more importantly and costly if you didn't have one, it would be a construction & use offence not to have one if stopped by the Police. You may not ride much at night but you would need one in case of poor weather conditions etc... Secondly, the person who got rid of the lower light holder was just a bit lazy as all the internals, including your now missing clear lense swap over from the lower holder to the top one and the wiring justs connects up the same. As you can just about see in the photo above, I've done this mod on my own bike, although I'm using a DP carbon plate hanger.
Fantastic looking bike Shaun. Both the plate housings has been removed from yours? I will get the spacers some tine this week that will fit between the exhaust and the new EVOTECH No plate holder. I will assemble and post the result. Does the no plate light come on automatically when the bike is started? Regards, Mark.
I took my bike for an MOT and then realised the no. plate bulb had blown, I asked the tester about this and he told me that it is not part of the test so would still pass.
Thanks Shaun & Duke, I will assemble it when the spacers arrive & post a photo or two of it completed. If a clear lense does not show up I'll do without and refit the blank lense back to how it was and let the rear light shine on.
