Contemplating putting my dvt in for a 1200R Got one for the weekend on,y it's pissing down at the mo Just wondered what people views are on the R vs the S? You can pick up nearly new S models for a lot less money Wanted to know from peeps that have had both if there's a big difference And also what people's opinions were on the 821 as well basically the bike is just for fun and whizzing round the twisties on a sunny weekend. Realistically you can't go so fast on a naked bike anyway so was even contemplating that at the moment for 6K less Thanks in advance
I got the S. I contemplated the R but decided I don't need the extra power, could do without the extra seat height and didn't suffer from the "exhaust getting in the way of my foot" issue. I didn't try the 821 monster but did ride the 821 Hyperstrada, I think the engines are the same, and found that I sometimes just wanted more grunt. I went from a 2010 mutley to the monster and prefer the monster though long rides into the wind can be a pain in the neck. Defo try the 821 but I think, coming from the DVT, you'll feel a little let down by the fact it doesn't occasionally scare the living shit out of you in 2nd gear. (In a good way).
I test rode an S and it immediately inspired confidence (after 27 year break from biking) but put a deposit down on an R within a week of it being announced and have loved it so far (just done 600 miles and it's in for 1st service) I'd say it has given me even more confidence and changes to the suspension actually make it even better. I suppose it boils down to - do you (or can you) pay for the difference. There are some R demonstrators out there now, so I'd do a side by side comparison and see for yourself.
Had a decentish go on the R today , nice bike , and when you get a clear road to give it some beans it's great , however that was only 5 minutes of 2 hour ride out Pretty easy to get to the edge of the tyre , though they are decent tyres as well Not been on an S , hence the question Can understand the poke of the 1200 v but at certain speeds you remember your on a naked Lovely bike though You can pick up really low mileage s models though for a considerable chunk of money less. Negatives for me were the Foot on the exhaust thing Don't like the sound of the standard can Gearbox seems tight compared to the dvt Other than that I liked it
I can confirm that the gearbox on my 1200 R has really loosened up after the 600 miles. Started off being a nightmare to get into Neutral, but all that has gone now. Agree on exhaust
I've had my S about a month now, and I've done about 1200 miles on it. I'm very happy with it indeed. Slightly less poke compared to the R that I rode, but not enough to justify an extra £3000 or whatever it is (unless you can afford it and want the best). Fabulous bike, still crazy fast. All the torque you'd ever need. I personally wouldn't consider an 821 as I've been well and truly spoiled by the torque of my 1200. Although I'm sure in isolation it's probably great fun.
I took a test ride on both and ordered an R. It was an easy decision. IMO the two models possess a very different character, with the R feeling considerably more racey and poised, not to mention the stronger engine, sharper looks, and trick wheels. For me, the R model is a bona fide Streetfighter 1100S successor, and indeed improves on the SF as a sportsbike. By contrast, the S feels considerably less focused. That might well be a good thing, depending on your perspective.
Good summary. The S is still bonkers, but the R is more bonkers! Kind of wish I could get the R seat unit for my S, as otherwise I'm very happy with it. Owned it just over a month and done almost 2000 miles!
Not yet, heading off in about three weeks. The bike is great though. Stupid fast and great handling, really enjoying it!
I did a review of the S which is nice. However, never had enough about it to make me want to buy one. I've had the 1200R this week and getting it a few days again next week. It's a complete jump in performance and is making me consider changing my 1299 for one. S review - 2016 Ducati Monster 1200 S R Review and video will follow next week sometime
Just to add that in my head at least the R is the Monster Ducati have been wanting to build for a while. It's the first naked that has seriously, seriously made me think about changing. It's better than the Tuono, Superduke R. Why? It has that connected to the front feeling that a superbike gives you. The 1200S didn't give me that once in 3 weeks of riding it.
STOP MAKING ME FEEL BAD ABOUT MY S!!!! :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy: In all seriousness the R is brilliant, albeit a significantly more expensive bike. I found that increasing the rear preload made quite a big improvement on the stance of the bike, although I'd love to get my hands on an R seat unit. Nik
Hey Nik - I had a 1200 Stripe before I got the R - that was a fab'er'oony bike also. I don't think the R seat unit will fit on the S, I think the sub-frame is different :Arghh:
@MotoNik - footpeg hangers are different as well. Not sure if it makes a difference, but sounds expensive.
