900ss Ie - Checking Oil Level/topping Up.

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by GordonH, Aug 11, 2016.

  1. being new to 900ss ownership I've come to the conclusion that to fully check (and top up) engine oil levels you need to remove the bottom RHS fairing (at least).

Is this correct? Does anyone have a simpler workaround?

  2. You don't need to remove the fairing, it's probably easier if you do though , if you want to leave the fairing in place you will need a funnel to top up the oil, make sure you stand the bike virtually upright by placing a block under the side stand and allow time for the oil to settle or you will overfill.

  3. Or use a paddock stand. I have a length of plastic plumbing pipe and a funnel for topping up with fairing on. This is for carby mind.

  4. Cheers both.

OK in the garage but a bit of a faff at a petrol station.....hopefully it won't burn much oil.....

  5. Gearbox oil litre bottles have a semi flexible small diameter top to them for fitting into gearbox plugs, they work great for filling all sorts of bikes up without removing the fairing. You'll obviously have to replace the oil with correct stuff first.

  6. I can not remember ever having to top up on oil with my SSIE over about 12000 miles, excluding oil changes of course

  7. ...I'm hoping it doesn't burn oil....no smoke or fumes...........so signs are good.

I'm just conditioned by running a BM R1150R which uses a 3rd of a litre every 1000 miles (they all do that sir) kinda gets you into a routine of checking oil level and topping up at every 5th visit to the petrol station! Access on the Beemer is easy.....almost like it had been designed that way......

  8. Ha, Jerry thinks of everything !

  9. Never had to top up my 750sie between changes ,but always remove the rhs fairing.

  10. Yup, same here, mine doesn't use anything between changes either.

  11. My SS used no oil.
I used to take the filler cap off after a run to allow water vapour to escape though. The cap was tight when hot, so I used a length of one inch dowel with a slot cut in the end to remove the cap easily.
