Bolzano , Italy

  1. Hi
I`m off to Italy in a few weeks on my Hyperstrada. We are riding down to Bolzano and staying there for 10 days. We have had a look at the roads round there and have found the obvious passes and routes. Has anybody been down that way and could advise us on some interesting roads that aren`t as obvious. Thanks in advance.

  2. Only skirted along Italy via TIMMELSJOCH PASS ", you should do it.

Also, Garmsich in Germany is a super spot to set up base campy, Tarmac mecca is germany.

Andermatt in Switz is also a great base camp, loads of passes etc. Just watch for standing water in tunnels, no matter how sunny / warm it is.

Pay heed to speed limits in towns etc, and watch out for cops if you go to Austria, in fact, avoid Austria altogether. Job done.

  3. On 11 July 2016 I rode the SR203 from Belluno to Agordo, then the SP347 from Agordo to Fiera. Fun roads, very little traffic, superb landscapes, not far from Bolzano, and I think qualify as not obvious.

Avoid the road from Cortina to Pieve - it's dire. Choked with traffic, overtaking almost impossible.

Try some of the yoghurt from Sterzing/Vipiteno - it's excellent.

    Just a few suggestions.

  4. Thanks for the tips. We have got to go into Austria and have had to buy a vignette just to use their motorways. If you don`t have one you get an on the spot fine. I think the least time spent in Austria the better.

  5. Thanks for the help.

  6. But an Austrian vignette is only about £4 for 10 days. In Switzerland you have to buy a years worth for about £30. I've been through Austria 4 times and loved it.
Any of the roads to the east of Bolzano will take you through the Dolomite region. You just can't go wrong. I spent 10 days there last year based near Caprile. The region is full of fantastic passes and amazing scenery.
