Yea I know what you mean about the dubious rear tube. I'll see how much it might cost to machine up some cups to match our existing bolt retainers together with a new retaining shaft. Cnc lathe should make them pretty cheap and we can incorporate a discreet deeper spring pocket. I would personally use a live lock on side panel cup mounted fittings and dzus for the rest. It's pretty easy to drift the pin out of a dzus so a bespoke cup isn't out of the question.
On one of our outfits, the chassis had similar tube things for mounting the fairings...........that's how they were made, so owners could fit whatever sort of fixings they wanted. We had a short stub of pipe which had a small plate welded at the correct angle across the end. The stubs slotted into the chassis tubes and were retained at the correct position with R-clips. The plate had the Dzus spring thingy riveted to it. So, we could almost have the same thing for the SS pipe mounting.......15mm OD stub and a plate......
mine are not sprung loaded, no washer and the retainer is riveted on. They are half turn out. I would think they were fitted in Japan with all the other fancy bits that were on it.
Do the pins fall out of the fairing if they are undone, or is there something on the back of them which stops that? I think a nylon type washer under the head would stop the head from graunching into the paint, and a retainer washer on the pin would stop the pins from being lost if they come undone when riding etc. I'll pop over when I have a minute and take a look at yours if that's OK?
Al, did you have any success with this? I have some for the nose and belly Im gonna put on but what happened with the side ones?
All my dzus fasteners have had a plastic washer under the head to protect the paintwork and a plastic washer on the pin on the inside of the fairing to retain it. I've found that the riveted retainers have enough of a spring action to not fall out although over time they do weaken.
Sorry...........Been very tied up...........and no, I haven't gone any further with the fasteners because I haven't had the time. However, I know what you can use for the side fasteners........... I think you will find it is a Dzus Panex Press-In recepticle....I'm not sure on the size because I haven't checked the wellnut diameter or the tube I/D. Part Number: D8-334-110- 190 (Size 6, I think) The idea is shown in the sample panel drawing below. Page 396 of the Dzus catalogue..........'Blind Install' ..............shows a Size 4. That would do for the fairing tube fixings anyway.....
I considered using those but couldn't find anyone selling them in small quantities - where are you getting them from?
Just as a heads up I lost two out of the underside of the fairings couple of weeks ago so have now locked wired them all on, just to make sure. It may have been down to age. I think you can get them off the bay in singles or pairs.
I have stainless Allen dzus type fasteners in oem backing plates on my 999. Love to replace the well nut belly fasteners with something similar. Hate well nuts... :/
Lockwiring them does defeat the object a bit...........probably still quicker than fiddling with bolts and wellnuts though...... .....But as I have mentioned before (I think) unless the springs and the pins etc are in really good condition, the general flexing of the fairing can cause them to spring out..........that's one reason why it's best to have the pop-up type with retainers on them. On our oufits, they were always springing open owing to the fairing flexing which is why they always had a piece of gaffer tape stuck over them just before the races.
I think to start I will just do the fairing minus the post and the front subframe lower. I have racebolt fasteners as they are stainless. Not sure whethertey will fit the Dzus recepticles.
