1198 Shark Fin / Toe Guard / Lower Chain Guard

  1. Hi all.
I'm using my 1198 as a pure race bike. One of the safety measures required by our race group is a toe guard (also called a shark fin or lower chain guard).
These protect the foot from being cycled between the chain and rear sprocket during a crash.
I couldn't order one in time for my race (and they're expensive) and was lucky enough to have a friend design one for me.
We made it out of aluminum. I thinned the base, as we discovered the brake lines run along a channel under the swing arm. I wanted as little change in depth as possible. I used one existing hole and drilled a new one and used a self tapping screw.
    Not pretty but it worked!
I've also attached the PDF to make your own (not sure if it worked or not).

  2. PDF works fine. Necessity is often the mother of invention and a nice solution. Andy

  3. Comes out ok but there are loads of dimensions missing. Or is it used as a template?

    As for self tapping screws.....!

  4. The PDF can be used as a template. I just printed and cut the outline then did the bends.
I didn't have the clearance for a bolt head. Ended up counter sinking the hole for the screw (kinda a mix of a screw and bolt really). It was scary and not pleasant drilling into the swing arm! I'd already broken enough parts on the bike!
