1200 R False Neutral

Discussion in 'Monster' started by Stanster, Aug 17, 2016.

  1. Good Afternoon now had my 1200R for a few months and she is an absolute beauty. However I have now covered approx 400 miles on it and I seem to keep finding a few false neutrals. I realise she is still very young but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Would appreciate your observations. Cheers

  2. I had a lot of trouble finding Neutral but that cleared up after about 200 miles. Not had false neutrals though to be fair. Had mine since Easter and done about 800 miles now.

  3. As Ian said. I've not hit any false neutrals but finding the real neutral can be sod until the gearbox loosens up.

You do need to be firm and positive with your changes while the 'box beds in.

  4. I've done 4000+ miles now since April. I've had one false neutral going from 5th to 6th - none since. It was more my fault than the gearbox - as Kempy says, positive action and you should be fine.

  5. I hit a false neutral a few times on the demo bike in just 40 miles or so. The bike was virtually new, and I was riding it hard. Dealer suggested that the run-in mileage and first service would sort it. I was also accustomed to a quickshifter and may not have been shifting positively enough.

I've had just one false neutral on my bike, before the first service. None since. Neutral was occasionally tricky, but hasn't been since the first service. Now at ~1k miles.

I suspect it's something to do with the 'run-in oil' and tight gearbox from the factory, and 'light' shifting. Get it through the first service and see how you get on.

  6. I'd agree there is something with run in oil. I suspect it's really thin to help ensure oil gets everywhere. I also hope this may help stop the bike from being so warm after it's run in service.

  7. I've had a few in 3k miles, most often between 5th and 6th. My previous bikes have all been Japanese with silky smooth gearboxes and I put it down to not being firm enough. Not had any trouble finding the real neutral though.

  8. You're not booting it in gear hard enough. Simples.

  9. Try adjusting the gear linkage down a couple of mm. Cured them on my 999 and 1198.

  10. As others have said, it's probably because the bike is so new. If they persist, have a look at how far the gear lever has to travel up and down in order to execute a change (the lever throw). I had loads of false neutrals on my old 1098, and was getting them early on with the 1299 I have now. I thought 'Oh shit, here we go again with Ducatis'. I found that the lever throw was quite large (more than 30mm), whereas on the RSV4 I had between the Ducatis it was less and the box on that was a peach. I fitted after-market rearsets (having researched and found a set that would reduce the lever throw) and haven't had a falsie since. The lever throw is now about 20mm.

  11. I've got a new 1200R and I've only had 1 false neutral between 5th and 6th - that was my fault for not being firmer. Ducati's boxes need a good, affirmative gear change, I found this on all the Ducati bikes I've had.

Finding neutral is a joy compared to a Tuono. I've only done 100 miles or so on the 1200R but I'm finding neutral no problem. On my Tuono it would only go in coming back from 2nd. Neutral was a myth from 1st gear.

  12. If you adjusted the size of the grips you need to amend the bite point of the clutch.

  13. First thing you need to do is Stop Shifting like a PUSSY.
I had the same problem came from a line of Japanese bikes with a feather light, scalpel precise gear shifters, was getting false neutral on my first Itallian,
You have to mean it when you shift, do not baby the gear lever like we did on the Japanese.
Theese Itallians like it rough :)
