    But seriously a crank breaking in two!!? Has to be flawed casting, surely? Unless some debris from the first blow up lodged in a crank journal and caused massive local overheating but tough to imagine it ending in the crank snapping.

    From the way BH were talking, if they find it must be a manufacturing problem then they throw their weight at Ducati to get them to sort it. Ducati's response to me was shit but maybe if they get a letter from BH the response may be a bit different.

    If it all ends up going well I'll also write to the dealer sarcastically thanking them for their support in fighting my side with Ducati. If they work out that the last engine failure caused this, I'll inform them that their unwillingness to do the job fully has caused this and that their lack of support is not what you expect. I'll also inform them I will never be using their services again.

  6. Cranks can fail due to incorrect support from there bearings , not supported properly cranks can flex and fracture , so not always a manufacturing flaw

  8. Agreed , but like already a been said there's been to many cases of crank or bearing failure on the earlier models ..... in fact researched by yourself .
    There must be some kind of engineering / tolerance / sub standard parts issue .

    The other crank failures that you had notes on did they have other prior work done before the crank failed , as to put metal debris around the engine to make the other bearings fail
     
  9. Hi. I've been watching this unfold and is there anyway you can check the crank or bearing before it happens. I have a 2010 and at the moment all seems well. But thought I would ask in case there is something I can do to prevent it happening. Cheers.

  10. Take the engine out and split the cases. Too much money and effort, just enjoy the ride and try to put it to the back of your mind.

  12. If I won the lottery and it was a decent amount, I would actually buy up every broken out of warranty multi and just dump them outside the door of Ducati HQ. Maybe that would be enough of a wake up call for them.

  13. I have a mental image of a biker in full gear, helmet, boots and gloves in place trying to explain to the local officer what he's doing in the middle of nowhere with no moto while his bike is flaming in the background... :tearsofjoy:

  14. JH, I'm thinking I might sell my SMT after all...
    I bought it as a budget tourer that would be a laugh. Just been round Wales on it and yes its a great laugh on the twisties when the luggage is off, but for proper touring its not ideal. The seat isn't the most luxurious and there's limited room. The fuel range is on the short side and it feels a bit raw and raucous for long days in the saddle, especially if the roads are dismal or its raining when you need all the creature comforts you can get by way of compensation.
    Soon as I got home removed all the luggage, cleaned it and went for a back road blatt it made instant sense again, but I'm not sure I want to do another tour on it and really that's what I want it for.

    I'm thinking I might sell the SMT and the Streetfighter and buy an 1190 Adventure or maybe a 1200 GS, but probably the KTM because its faster than the Beemer and wheelies off the throttle in third which is what you need for touring. :Smuggrin:

    You can have first dibs if it does go up for grabs and you're interested.

  15. Waiting to see what happens after the dust settles. May even be an S1000XR on the cards, we'll see.

    Off to see the damage tomorrow and see exactly what else has been taken out by the crank.

  16. I must get my bum on an XR. Rode a Fireblade a few weeks back, first time on an IL4 since 2007 and I really enjoyed it.
     
  17. If you're not 7" tall and don't want the bike for long distance touring, don't rule out an S1000R. They're stonking and a bargain compared with the XR, even in SE guise with quickshifter, electronic suspension et al.

  20. Bearing actually didn't look too bad. The crank has just snapped. In his opinion it's a manufacturing fault. Report goes off to BlackHorse today and I should know in a week tops
