Recommend me a clutch slave cylinder please

  1. I seem to have an issue with my 996SPS' clutch all being well its just air in the system and seeing as the bike had only done 99 miles in the last 3 years before I did 150 on it last weekend. I'll forgive it that.

    All being well I might take the opportunity to change my OE slave cylinder for an upgrade. Can you recommend one? Demon Tweeks has an Oberon one for £90 odd and the JHP one is £149 Is it £50+ better if it is better at all?

    I would appreciate any guidance
     
  2. I have had the Oberon fitted to my old S4RS and also the 1098R. Works a treat, and the anodized black finish has held up very well.
     
  3. The aftermarket slave cylinders which claim to reduce lever pressure do so at the cost of increasing lever pull distance required to move the push rod the same amount; that is to say that to get an easier clutch pull you will have to pull the lever further.

    Your 996SPS is right on the edge of the year that Ducati switched their clutch master cylinder size (from 13mm to 12mm), so depending on which one you have you could end up with clutch issues - the increased pull required on the lever may stop you being able to use the clutch, getting clutch drag, difficulty finding neutral, etc!

    The later (star pattern) Ducati clutch slave already has a 15% reduced effort over the earlier slave cylinders, without the hassle of distance issues.

    You may also have the "short" clutch push rod (sticks out less than 30mm from the engine case) in which case you will also need an adapter to work correctly, which some suppliers may not include in their kit.

    Be careful, do your research and you should be fine! If it was me, I'd go for the later OEM Ducati slave (which has improved sealing and reduced lever effort anyway) and make/buy an adapter if required.

    I had one on my bike and it was a nightmare, easier throw, but couldn't get the bugger in neutral, if I then adjusted the lever to get neutral this then placed the biting point right at the very, very top of the lever's travel.

    However, others (many) have fitted them and its been happy ever after.
     
  5. Have a oberon on my 848 and a mpl on my 749, both really good bits of kit, couldnt recomend one over the other. Would just look to see what one i could get the best deal on
     
  6. Got an Evoluzione on the 916 (with stock master cyl.) been on 14yrs and has been faultless, even the clutch fluid doesn't go black. Got an Oberon on the Monster (with Brembo RCS master cyl.), so far so good but done less than 200 miles so a bit early to tell. You have to be careful to match the size with the master or you may not get enough plate separation.
     
  7. JUST TO REALLY MESS THINGS UP......... I've got standard slaves on all my bikes and never had a problem, in fact I took off the Oberon on my 916 when I bought it and fitted a S/H standard one which was siezed/rusted solid when I got it. Just cleaned it up with fine wet n dry and then polished the bore with the oldest most worn out 1200 grade I could find which only took about 30min to do, fitted a new seal to the piston and four years later it still works perfectly with no leaks or air in fluid problems, just tried it and it's perfect after sitting unused for nearly two years.

  8. +1 for the Evoluzione. Fitted to a 748sp. Lovely purple anodising went well with the yellow and white sp :biggrin:
     
  9. Have Oberon cylinders on my bikes, and all work well with a lot less effort than with the standard units. Did have initial trouble with selecting neutral on the 916 but with careful lever adjustment ,this was overcome. The 796 Monster lever is so light as standard, that I won't need one here. (fitted to 796R, 916,996)

  12. Indeed and a damn shame too. For the record the Evo slave on my 916 is still going well after 17 yrs, excellent piece of kit.

    That said the Oberon on the Monster is still doing the business too...

  15. Hi, Is it possible to upgrade to that "star pattern" type without the need for any modifications etc? I have a 1999 996 and hoping i can switch to this star pattern??
