Anyone imported a bike to the UK from outside of the EU? Was thinking of bringing one of my bikes over from NZ and keen to get an idea of general process and any pitfalls..... thought to ask here before I had to resort to the DVLA
I've only imported to UK from an EU country. What I can do is give you the number / email for vosa. That'll be your biggest hurdle I think... On hols while Saturday so might have to wit until then but I'll have a quick look on my iPad. Ian
Cheers Ian. From what I can make out... the costs include: - Shipping & Insurance Costs - Duty % on the Bike value (also on the Shipping Costs) - VAT % on the Bike value - DVLA Registration & Processing Costs
I imported from Jersey, which is outside the EU. You are pretty much sorted with your costs there. I paid all of the above. Here is some help - https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/temporary-imports You'll get a NOVA declaration once HMRC are satisfied all monies have been paid. You'll need an MOT to register the bike Insurance, usually on the VIN number. You may have to have vehicle approval. I didn't as my bike was originally registered in the UK and exported. The original registration made this step painless. Get a pack from the DVLA, everything is in there. Order DVLA forms - GOV.UK Once you satisfy all of the criteria, you'll get a registration number pretty quickly.
Appreciate it thanks. So looking at about 3K to get an 8K's market valued bike from NZ to the UK at a guess of 1K shipping costs. I did read somewhere that there was a different duty rate on a box of bits rather than a complete bike. Not sure if this true or not... but would be worth looking into.
Well, you have to work out if it's worth it or not. You may be better selling the bike and buying in the UK. I wouldn't try to play about with HMRC though to save a couple of quid.
Yup, it'll cost you £1k to ship it, + 20% vat(of what it's worth now I'd guess and import duty. Can't remember what rate. Maybe 5-7% Registering here is not difficult. Hang on, just had a thought, if it's already yours and you've owned it more than 6 months then the above does not apply. Look it up on HMRC website. It'll tell you all you need to know. You may not have to pay the vat and duty but... Shipping an 8k machine is most likely not really worth it unless you love it of course.
I might be wrong Sam, but the guy I bought a bike from had it out of the country for more than 3 years, which meant VAT was payable even if he brought it back in. I assume that a bike being brought in from NZ would be liable for VAT. I'd like to hear if that's the case though
Everyone has missed the elephant in the room !!!! What the hell would you want to leave nz to come to pre brexit uk for. The country's in self destruct.
Imported a Suzuki from NZ a couple of years ago, not difficult, final costs and registration process will depend on the age and market value of the bike, eg: older than 10 years will mean exemption from type approval nonsense. If you're not in hurry and want to save on shipping speak with Daniel, tons of knowledge and very helpful, no wasted packing charges the bikes are in shipping containers on bespoke forklift supports, see image. TT AND EUROPE MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURES - Escape the NZ winter he arranged a one way shipment for me, he ships his race bikes and customers over for the TT, my bike arrived at Gravesend in early May. Looking at the site he's obviously increased the frequency of shipments. Happy to talk if you want more info, PM me your number. Wayne
I had this itch to ride on congested roads, desire to suck in exhaust and road pollution, and wanted to practice my wet weather riding... :tongueout:
