Had my ZX10R a month now, and just starting to get used to going up from a 600 to a litre bike Not seen the pics from this week on the photographers site, but here's some footage from Oulton this week
Nice. How are you finding the move up from a 600 Graeme? I know it's not all about lap times, but have you seen the reduction you were hoping for/expecting? Sure, litre bikes don't immediately mean quicker laps, but surely that's why we 'upgrade' no? I've only been to Donington on the RC8 so far and hadn't been there before, but I'm at Silverstone GP on the 12th so I'll have some lap times to compare - if I'm not quicker at Silverstone on the RC8 compared to the CBR600RR I think I'll just jack it all in [emoji23] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hey mate I'm Silverstone on the 12th too, so it'll be good to get a laps out together It's a very different bike to my old 600, but I definitely prefer it I loved my zx6r, but I have a lot more confidence in the zx10, I just need to grow some balls to use it I had a best at oulton of 1:55 on the zx10, whereas I never broke 2mins on the 6, so it'll be interesting to see how it fares at Silverstone now I've kinda got my head around it now SimonT's there too, so perhaps we can garage together if you're up for it If we both go slower, we can at least sit in the cafe and drink coffee whilst getting our bikes on eBay together then
A good 5+ seconds off a 2 minute lap time is a decent improvement. I presume you've booked fast group for Silverstone? The chap I'm going with was adamant he wanted to stick with inters, so unfortunately that's where I'll be. If I'm feeling like I'm being severely held up I'll ask to move up though. Yep, let's get a garage. We should swap numbers I guess so whoever arrives first can let the other know their whereabouts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Silverstone is massive.... You shouldn't really get held up in Inters. At times it felt like I was the only person on track!
My mates on Daytona 675 usually match me on the 1199S Panigale so dont knock yourself if you do not get better times on the bigger bike unless you're running in the slower groups where the straight line acceleration makes more of a difference, or the one or two tracks with really fast straights It's more the change in rhythm that differentiates the big and small bikes.
I totally get that a quick rider on a 600 would show me up on a litre bike, weren't the 600 supersport guys last weekend at Cadwell lapping at 1:29's or something amazing?
It's mind blowing the lap times they manage. I try to get my head around where they are finding the speed but it's not even any particular sections; they are faster everywhere.
As the bsb is at oulton next week, there was a couple of the kids on the 250cc GP3 bikes lapping mid 1:40's
I was happy with my late 53's at brands Indy on my 899. You boys would probably blow me out of the water. I do get annoyed with slow riders on litre bikes though down the straights !
Seeing as the 1x99 Panigales are lighter than the 899/959 then surely it should be possible to get more corner speed out of the bigger bike? Easier said than done for mere mortals but it's my theory?? We're mates with Thomas Strudwick who does the Motostar BSB championship on the moto3 bikes. He laps Donnington in the same time as me on the R and his bike has a top speed of only 130mph! His corner speed is immense. I tried to match his speed into the first corner and nearly lost it. It's made worse as the R suspension wasn't set up at this point but it wouldn't be much difference if it was!
You are right that it is about corner speed as much as anything, and that is where most people that want to ride home don't push. As far as weight, Most riders weigh more than most racers, and you could certainly see the 10kg difference in bike swallowed up by a heavier rider (also, isn't it just the 959 that is heavier? Mostly due to the exhaust).
That's one thing especially I love the 899's for @Jolley They loved apex speeds. I was closing gaps loads through bends, and didn't feel like I was especially 'going for it' Naturally the big litres pull down the Straights though..
Not as much as you would think. The only things that really disappear down the straights are the ones that go through and out of the corner better. The bigger bikes that just pin it on the straights will edge away, but not disappear like you might expect. The point I think I'm trying to make is that it is still all about corner speed... Not just for the corner, but to build on down the straights. If someone is cornering slower, it takes a while for them to make it up on the straight.
