What's A Good Length Security Chain To Get?

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by dubcat, Sep 2, 2016.

  1. Hi, I'm considering getting an Almax III security chain for use at home (with a ground anchor) and when out and about in London or for overnight stays elsewhere. Is this a good brand to get?

They can be had in 1.5m, 2m and 2.5m. Obviously the longer the length, the more weight and size to lug about in the tailpack. Too short and you can't tie the bike to street furniture. What length would you get?

  2. Almax or Pragmatis are the 2 best UK brands

Pragmatis also does anti pinch pins and ground anchors both of which are exellent

I use the 19 mm chains and a pin at home with a ground anchor all from Pragmatis

    Super stuff

That the Uber 4 chain from Almax

That chain is too heavy to carry

So if you can a 19mm at home and 13mm or bigger for carry

You dont say what bike so not poss to advise on length

If you use a pin and put it through rear axle and have a ground anchor then 1 M is enough

Through wheels then you probably need 1.5 m

Talk with Steve at Pragmatis he is SUPER helpful.

  3. I have the Almax 3 and ground anchor. Think it's 2m long and chains 2 bikes :)

  4. Hi Simon,

It is a 848 that i want to secure.

    Hi Toro

Would you say a 2m Almax 3 would be long enough tie the bike to stuff on the street or would a 2.5m be better?

What padlocks are you guys using?

  5. I'd say a 2m should be long enough, and I have no idea what the lock is but I remember it is a heavy duty one and cost about £15

  6. Ok thanks. I have a Kriega US-20 tail pack to carry it in. I think i will get the 2m one.

Do you thread it through two bikes and a ground anchor or do you treat the bikes as the ground anchors? :)

  7. I use abloy 462 padlocks

Retail is like 200 pounds but you can pick them up on ebay for aroun 60

    They are CEN 6 rated

For the pinch pins you need a squire SS65CS from memory as the pin is designed to work with that lock

Again its CEN 6 rated - higheat level for padlock

The Ablloy is bigger and tougher

For a 13mm chain that you want to carry a squire SS50CS is smaller and lighter but not as high secured - but neither is chain

Abloy also do a smaler 362 padlock which would be fine with small chain

Look and see if you can use pinch pin it makes locking up easier and also leas chance to chip paint on bike

If you can put a broom handle though rear spindle you can use them.

  10. Thanks. I will google pinch pin.

I only want to buy one chain and it needs to therefore be portable. 16mm seems like a good compromise.

  11. Thanks - in that case, 2m is the length i will get.

  12. Pragmatis do a 17mm that is lighter and works with loch and pin i believe too

    Pragmatis web site is securityforbikes.com

    Search anti pinch pin

    You will find them

  13. I'm liking that pinch bolt. How do you use it on your bike to save the paint? Also shouldn't you be putting the chain through the frame? Back wheels are easily removed aren't they?

  14. On the Multistrada - the pin goes through the back wheel hub - so it secures the rear wheel and swingarm - so bike and the chain fits the open end

  15. I know am being thick but what is securing the pinch bolt to the bike?

  16. There is a big head on the one side to stop it pulling one way and then when its locked the chain and lock stop it being pulled back the way it was fitted.

  17. That is marvellous!!! I will see if i can make this work on my 848 when i get home from holiday. It has a single sided swingarm so i am hoping it is hollow and wide enough diameter to accomdate. Would make keeping the bike on the ducati paddock stand impossible but cest la vie.

  18. I really don't think the anti-pinch pin works with the 848 unfortunately :-(, it tells you this on their website

  19. Ahhh shame :(

  20. I have a pragmasis anti pinch pin which I used on my 848. Now using it on my 1299.
19mm chain and ground anchors front and back.
