899 Panigale Build Quality

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by gt_lad, Aug 30, 2016.

  1. Any thoughts on this one? I bought mine 18mths ago I love it, just feeling a little bit un-easy at the thought of the warranty running out soon and no extension available...?! I had my side stand replaced because the finish went off, now the engine casing is starting to flake, the black paint on the exhaust outlet is flaking, the horn is rusting badly and my quick shifter stopped working on the last ride. I know finish is one thing but the fear of expensive electrical/mechanical failure is making me think about a change.
Has anyone else experienced many issues? Looking forward to some different takes on this.
    Thanks.
P.s It's a well cared for dry bike too!

  2. Mines 2.5 years old. Not one issue to date :)

  3. My 1199 is a 12 plate and is absolutely fine, although I replaced the fairing bolts as the originals are made of marshmallow.... Just make sure you clean and protect it over winter and you'll have no dramas... If you sell it you'll regret it...

  4. buy warranty, mate. you will not regret it. worth every penny

  5. Mines been good touch wood.

Had the exhaust flaking you speak of, got a new silencer under warranty.

Also had my heat shield fall to pieces which was also replaced.

Also had a chain replaced under warranty for a gold link one as my one looked like it came off the titanic within a very short time.

Other than that, as I say touch wood!! It's been great.

  6. Mine has 19,000 miles on it now (2013 1199S) and I've had a good number of warranty claims - both valve covers leaked, new dash due to fogging, turn signal issue, clutch issue / recall, headlight, rear indicator and tail light replaced due to water ingress, CAN BUS error due to damp connector (I fixed that) and a couple of other little bits. They all happened early on to be honest and since then it's been great - very reliable and has taken all kinds of weather (except deep winter and salty roads). I'd buy another one in a flash... In fact, that's exactly what I'm doing [emoji41]

  7. It wasn't possible to get extended warranty on a Panigale from the likes of warranty direct last time I checked (for new customers anyway). WD classed it as a high risk bike. Ducati's Ever Red is only available on newer bikes.

  8. Has anyone got a 3rd party warranty on the 899 or 959?

  9. dealers are offering extra 3rd year for£300 or 3/4 year for£600 on a 959

  10. Anybody else got a 3rd party warranty running on a 899?

  11. Some fairly positive comments here, thanks. I think I'm going to get the bike to the dealer and collect it when everything's sorted and look into extending the warranty next March... If I can. If not I might still consider a change? We'll see.

  12. i am just about to get massive repair bill on mine... luckily i have extended warranty , hopefully they will cover it all

  13. Mind me asking what for?

Is it something that failed on the bike or self inflicted?

I'm just weighing up whether to risk buying a 899 with 3 months warranty vs the 959 with more.

Price wise is circa £2000 between the two bikes so it's not a clear cut choice

  14. oil leak, pressure sensor, rad, horn, fork seals, exhaust valve failure,

this is straight after bike had gear sensor replaced and slave cylinder under warranty 3 weeks ago.

  15. For the sake of £2000 get a new 959

I looked at 899s and couldn't justify the cost of them compared to a brand new current model with full warranty and only my arse ever being in the saddle. Worth 2 grand to me

  16. got to agree with flatstick, thats what i have just done:grinning:

  17. You won't be disappointed it's a great bike

  18. It's not a new 959 at £2k extra, it's a 2nd user who traded in for a 1299.

Still has 20+ months of warranty but even still, it ain't new.

Warranty Direct cover the 899, their first 'impulse buy' Web quote is £400

They'll probably give me a call today and offer it a bit lower, I'd pay nearer £300 without issue.

I've also found out that the 899 can be flashed with a Rexxer map, helps sort the fueling out low down and brings a little more torque to the Midrange, also deletes the flapper valve.

I'm still undecided at the moment whether the 959 is worth it but hopefully today will sort that out as I'm going for a test ride this afternoon :)

  19. From my first ride on my new 959 on Thursday I thought I'd just bought a marginally improved bike from the 899 but having ridden it some more I believe it's a significant improvement on the 899 once you start to use the power. The sum of all the new parts makes it so.

  20. Did you have the 899 mapped?

Just wondering whether a mapped 899 would be there or thereabouts as strong in the Midrange as the 959 running lean for emissions. There's no mapping for the 959 at present as I understand it.

Oh and I had to cancel today's test ride, weather ended up being shit as I started riding over, when I got wet I threw my toys out the pram and headed home :)
