Hey 03 999. Should the fasteners that join the 2 side panel's to together underneath the engine both be screw in with a rubber well nut or is one a Dzuz? Thanks.
CR mine are Dzus caps under the engine(03 999), same as my 02 748S but silver rather than gold finish, not sure if they are oem however.
OEM was def wellnuts but IIRC early ones had 1, not 2. Later fairings or modded maybe? Either way, wellnuts!
Started life with Dzus, but issues with them coming adrift and the fairings pretending they were parachutes led to wellnut/screws being fitted. If you have dzus, swap them out. It gets scary and expensive if they come out....
My 999 has 2 Dzus studs under the fairing... But one was missing and shortly after a 'service' by previous owner. I have now replaced both with 'D' ring Dzus studs. I then flipped the 'D' ring(s) so as to point towards each other, I then passed a cable tie (quicker than lock wire) between each ring!
Yeah as the others have said they came with wellnuts. Unless your doing a resto job rivet Dzus in there, most d-rings will be too big to fully close in the recess so if you 'need' your rings flat against the bodywork then don't use d-rings, consider using the ones with an Allen head or flat blade screwdriver/coin slot instead. Fwiw I've started putting star washers along with the regular nylon washer on the inside of panels to retain Dzus bolts (from falling out), they work a treat. I also use the star washers in place of well nuts to retain the windscreen thingy and a few other places, much lighter than wellnuts, less fugly, etc.
Is that right? I'm asking as I have some OEM early fairing here that haven't been converted and came with wellnuts? Yeah I've lost a bunch of Dzus but now I retain them properly I don't lose any.
Thanks @Air Duck... Agree about perhaps the D Rings not sitting flat, but as its hidden underneath I'm not too worried.. It was the std screw slot Dzus that fell out in the 1st place... Next time I'm with the 999 i'll take a pici....
Sounds like they just need retaining properly. Dzus are so bloody quick - I feel I'm getting old waiting to unscrew screws from wellnuts by comparison. Search ebay/google for star washers if you don't know what they are, put em over the Dzus pin once it's inserted into the panel, and then flatten the washers tangs with a small screwdriver to bring the tangs close to the Dzus pin, that way the star washer's inner diameter is smaller than the end of the Dzus pin meaning it won't just fall out again.
