1000 Struggle To Start It Up

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Martin Kubec, Sep 24, 2016.

  1. Hi!

    Multi 1000, 2003

When I press the ignition button, it does turn for a second, but nothing more. Eventually I get the yellow light on the dash as well. After 10-20 presses, it actually turns the engine properly and here we go. Idle is smooth afterwards.

I cleaned the spark plugs (these are 7k miles old - 10 months), but they look in good shape. Battery is few months old. I even measured it with multimeter, all good there.

I cleaned pins on the fuel pump relay, seems OK as well.

Any idea what it could be? Maybe the electric cabling needs to be replaced? Or new starter, it still got the original one I guess and bike's got 21k miles. How long does the starter lasts roughly? Last proper service 7k miles ago, 10 months.

Any advice would be appreciated please,

Thank you and ride safe! ;)

  2. Try adding a secondary earth lead from the battery -ve to the starter motor bolt. If that works then consider doubling up or replacing the cables to the starter relay and from the relay to the starter. It's all available as a kit from one of the forum members at a discounted price.

  3. Yes, get a kit from @Exige on here. It will be like a different bike with decent cables :)

  4. Also check and clean the earth strap, front left of engine hidden behind breather pipes an oil rad lines.

  5. guys, thank you very much for your advises, it's much appreciated!
