1299 Track Prepping The Pani

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Lyndon, Aug 31, 2016.

  1. Hi all am turning my 1299 into a track bike just wondered what mods people have made.

I'm going to start with getting some track fairings (probably the oe ones from motorapido) and some gb racing casings.

Ready for Cadwell on the 2nd October, anyone else doing that one? Then maybe some more mods over the winter ready for next year.

Going to use the supercorsas initially.

May look into getting the suspension set up for my weight (100kg)

    Cheers Lyndon

  2. Hi Lyndon,

Will be an awesome tool on track!

Quite a few guys have turned their pani's into track bikes so plenty of threads to have a look over mods and installations which you may find helpful.

The mods i have made on my 1199 so far have been:
Ducati Performance track fairings with the DP screen and used Illusion Race Paint for the livery
Rizoma Foot Pegs (standard 1199 pegs were a little slippy, plus have some spare pegs now)
    GB Racing Covers
Pirelli SC1 Supercorsa's on Front and SC2 compound on the rear - Also looking at getting some slicks and wets
OZ Piega Wheels - waiting for the rear to come into stock
Thicker Brembo discs (slightly thicker than standard ones)
Lightech Brake Levers (standard will be spare set)
    Some carbon fibre bling
Last track day i did at Silverstone i also had my suspension set up and the bike feels amazing, i would definitely recommend in suspension setup.

Future upgrades i am thinking about:
    Quick release sprocket
    Rearsets
    Blipbox

  3. Awesome stuff, the list keeps growing lol did you install the fairings and gb covers yourself?

  4. Yea i installed them myself.

There is a thread a member called Roaywithcream created which has been added to. It explains the installation there.

If you can also get hold of the 1299 instruction manual that will help with removal and installation of fairings.

Fairings were a bit of a faff for me but the GB engine covers are a doddle

  5. +1 I bought the Ducati fairings - a bit fiddly and a few emails to Royal and all done. They came with all the ducts, blanking pieces, mirror infills and plugs to avoid dash warnings.

GB covers, fork and swing arm sliders and you are good to go.

Get the suspension set up by Colin at 100% suspension - at FE track days.

  6. Hi Lyndon,

First off, I don't have a 1299, but I have just about finished a track conversion of my 1198SP - but bikes are bikes. Have a look here for some ideas of parts and problems, of which there are many: http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/the-1198spr-build.38490/

I'd suggest that if you don't have a budget, set one (unless of course you don't have to). Money will run away with little bits here and there. I was shocked and I was fairly organised and disciplined!!

I don't know how seasoned you are on the track, but I guess you've done some track days. If so, you'll know suspension setup is key. I'm not sure which model of 1299 you have either, but Marzoochi's are possibly up to the job. You're weight (with kit) will decide that. Upgrading the suspension will probably be required.

Motor: The engine and gearbox will be bullet proof. I've you haven't got an exhaust/upgraded ecu/air filter, put them on the list. Maybe think about a session on a dyno to extract all you can from it. Not necessary though.

Stopping: Brakes will be good enough for the road, but track wise probably not if you're pushing on. The Calipers/Discs will be fine, but stick in some EBC EPFA or GPFAX pads and match up with a 19mm Brembo radial master - boy it'll stop!

Bodywork is a must. You just have to decide what you want: Quality with ease of fitment/finish but not cheap, or go cheap and accept the finish and hassle to spend elsewhere.

Wheels, lots out there: Marchesini, OZ, BST. All up to it just a personal preference on looks.

Protection: Radiator/oil cooler, fork/axle sliders, engine casing: GB moto and woodcraft do plenty.

Craig and Luke at Moto Rapido will see you right. As will Ben at Bike HPS

The list goes on and on, and is addictive.

    Hope that helps...

    Happy building

  7. Managed to get the engine side on but the alternator side seems a bit fiddly with pipe and electrics in the way? Any tips thanks

  8. How did you get on with fitting the engine covers?

I found the wires were in the way but if you try a bit of gentle persuasion it will go in.

  9. Yeah exactly the same bit of fiddling about I just didn't want to pinch anything too much, fingers crossed all good, fairing's were a nice fit but the head unit looks a bit more of a job so may get some help with that haha

    Cheers

  10. I can confirm the bit about getting carried away!! After smashing my Ducati Performance fairings I decided it would be better to go full race fairings to remove all the extra gubbins so bought some beautiful painted carbon fairings off of here. I then smashed them up and have just had to buy more which dont have the paint. Carbon looks nice but the bike as a whole looks like a parts bin special with the red tank, carbon fairings and fibreglass black tail unit so I'm trying to decide what is best now to get it all matched again without smashing my bank account more than my fairings.

  11. Oh maan those fairings similar to mine? What happened?

I got my fairings painted by Larry at Illusion Race Paint, £650 for all the fairings which is pretty reasonable if you compare with other painters out there e.g. Rage designs etc. He is based in Towcester.

@Lyndon when i fitted my engine covers the engine light came on, thought i had nipped something. Luckily it was just a coincidence, turned out my map sensor had gone and was nothing to do with my tinkering!

When fitting the nose piece just make sure you have transferred the air sensor from the old unit to the new unit, same with all clips. Also bung a load of WD40 on the grommets and nipple things make it easier when slotting it onto the bike.

  13. Hi guys trying to do the headlights today, any tips on where the blanking plugs are located am a bit confused on which bits need to come off/ be disconnected etc.

    Thanks

  14. From memory you should have a zip lock bag with a few blanking caps in them. They are different sizes for the front and rear etc so its a case of finding the corresponding sized plug.

Or I could be totally wrong.....

  15. Ok cheers I bottled it put the fairing on but left the lights in

  16. I'd recommend not leaving the light unit in on track fairings mate. It's £600 for a new one if you damage! Just take a bunch of pictures as you take it apart and you'll be fine.

The main one is the IMU which sits on a sort of triangle holder on the top of the light. This all needs moving to the new blank, including the round rubber holders.

There's a (temp?) sensor at the back of the light unit with one screw, it's got a little pole that sticks down into the air flow. That needs to be transferred to the light blank.

There's another square plug with a metal clip in the top middle that you just need to take the plug off and put it onto the plastic blank connector moulded onto the light blank.

There are no blanking connecters for the light plugs at the front (there is one for the rear brake light).

  17. This will look a little different because I'm using the 1199 fairing stay that the dash screw to but the rest is much the same. Ignore the GPS as that normally goes on a plastic cover but behind that is the IMU which needs transferred over. The relays to the left are for indicators or high/low beam I think, so the plastic base and cable at least needs moving across. IMG_6539.JPG

  18. Thanks for that makes more sense for my limited mechanical/electrical skills.

May not have time before Cadwell but will do it thereafter

  19. Probably not very practical but you're welcome to bring it down our way in West London and me and @Sam1199S can give you a hand?

  20. Thanks, may do that in the future, il prob put it away for a few months after Cadwell but thinking of Cartagena in Feb with no limits so would like to to have it all done by then
