Upgrading Brake Discs And Calipers (996 To 999 Style)

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Cream_Revenge, Sep 29, 2016.

  1. Hey
Brakes on 999 cracking, on 996, not so much. Could I get a brake setup same/similar to my 999 on my 996 without new forks?

And I assume the master cylinder should also be upgraded?

And what sort of £££ would I be looking at?

    TIA

  2. Often dabbled with the idea of some Radial brakes for my 996. Then priced it all up.... [emoji848] Good luck chap, hope you can do an upgrade [emoji1360]

  3. Brembo RCS master cylinder looks rather pretty, too... [emoji7]

  4. Nothing wrong with the OEM Brembo 4 pad calipers off the 748R. Currently using them on my track bike with the Brembo billet master cylinder, SC pads and fully floating cast iron discs. I would say a master cylinder and pad upgrade is a good place to start and a lot less complicated than changing fork bottoms or trying to find a well priced set of 1098 Showa or Ohlins forks forks and a set of M4s. 5. It looks like your 999 has same/similar calipers to my 998, and the forks in the 996 looks the same as the Showa in my 998? I might be totally wrong? I'm sure someone will confirm... You may need the master cylinder too?

I am happy with the Brembo set up on my 998(S) & I am fussy about my brakes.
I could quite easy lift the rear at good speeds (not necessary) but more importantly control it.. at slower speeds they are still use able. Completely confident in them, stopping at a short distance or reducing speed quickly.

They feel better than the brembo RCS 19- 18x20 and the M4 Brembo (mono blocks) on my blade (to me) and they were not cheap... The 998 has very little lever travel, lots of bite and still progressive.

I need to reduce the lever travel on the RCS set up and increase the feel which is not so easy.

I think you might have the same brakes as my 998(s) on the 999? not sure they are the same brakes on all models? I am not a ducati expert.

    Pic below is 996 (apparently)

    Pic below is my 998 Duc_998S_HN02PYZ (11).jpg

    Calipers look different.

  7. Think my 996 like your 998. 999 calipers have 4 separate pads per caliper so 1 per "pot".

  8. What sort of brembo master cylinder? I'm a bit lost in the world of brakes. Don't quite get what all the numbers/letters relate too.

  9. Hi mate. You could take the calipers off the 999 and fit them to the 996. Go for a blast out and see if they improve the braking. If they do, you could pick up a pair on eBay for less then £200.

  10. Ah, ok, so they will swap across, they looked similar size wise. Thx

  11. I have 749/999 4 pad calipers on my 916 (like on your 999) - see my picture in recent post "found this".
Great cheap upgrade (although when I did it 10 years ago this type of brake was "new" so were quite pricey to buy second hand).
The brakes on your 996 are not 4 pad type.

Oh yes, also have Brembo HPK discs and RCS master cylinder....

  12. Bettes knows way more than me, but I think my original statement stands, they may not be the same as the 999 calipers on my bike, but they look similar, the photos above show a 996 apparently and my 998 which has different calipers.

I have had a look and I think I have 4 seperate pads one for each piston, I would need to remove them to be sure.

If you needed stronger brakes than my 998 I'd be shocked... I can compress my forks all the way with stock springs and I'm sure I could lift the rear wheel at 100+ I could defo do it on an R1 with blue spot calipers and these feel stronger.

The biggest issue for me is always feel.
I don't like a lever where nothing happens then everything.... I've been on a stunt bike with crazy strong brakes, crazy because when you touched them slightly while rolling along, ie.. to spin the rear wheel, it's would nearly launch you over the tank, no feel.

I worry more about my front tyre grip when my brakes are good, then I worry about if I have left enough distance.

  13. Would he need the master cylinder too? are they smaller on that 996 set up.. I remember at the sausage cafe someone was saying about upgrading his brakes on his 996 I think, and it was different to mine...

Your brakes are as good if not better than mine Bettes, I am sure we have the same set up?

  14. Hi Karl. Yes, our brakes are the same. Good, aren't they. :)
I think the calipers on creamys should go on, 65mm spacing just not sure if the disk offset is the same... our calipers (p4/64) look the same but as you found out they can vary on the fixing point thickness.

  15. image.jpg Direct swap on my 65mm Showa forks.
By the way, I did use the 4 pad calipers with the standard 916 master cylinder for a couple of years with no problem. The calipers are deffo the most bang for buck upgrade alone.

  16. I did think that re. disc offsets vs if those forks feet are 100% compatible thickness as you say...

Ricky has just answered that.. I think CR will be pleased, if he likes his 999 brakes, no reason why they should not be as good once upgraded.

I don't want to change my brakes for anything.

  18. I was thinking about this kind of upgrade for my 996 but I tried some carbon front pads and the improvement in braking was like night and day.
