848 Temporary Change Of Termis Back To Stock... Info Appreciated

  1. Hi all

Today my bike failed raodworthiness due to excessively loud exhaust... Termi slips ons.

It is being reassessed in about 11 hours time.

I need to know do I need to also change the ECU and air filter, or will just changing the cans reduce the noise and still have the bike at least rideable? Once it passes, the termis will be going straight back on. As you can appreciate - I'm looking to change as little as possible.

Also - any advice on changing the mufflers would be appreciated...

  2. Not having an easy start on your bike are you mate?

Just swap the cans and you should be fine. Invest in some baffles if this is a reoccurring problem for the future.

Should be really easy if their slip on cans. Even if their bolted it's one of the easiest jobs around. I'd measure up the connecting pipe before you start just in case the previous owner went for 70mm Termi's. If they did they should have left the original connecting pipes on the standard cans.

While you're doing that, check for access to that dodgy pillion lock.

  3. The cats won't be given the easiest of times (it will wreck them eventually). Is the MOT centre close? If so it should be okay, just really gently ride it there and back.

  4. Do you mean it failed it's MOT, or some other failure?

    Solutions:
    1. Put the baffles in if you have them and re-test
    2. Put the original cans back on and re-test
    3. Find a more sympathetic tester. My 1098 passed its MOT without issue with Termis fitted.

As @Jim2wheels said, no need to change ECU and filter for such a short period. Long term use of stock (with cats) cans with a race ECU will damage the cats, but for a few miles to and from a test it will be fine.

  5. Ha, yeah... had to laugh (groan) when the inspector pointed out that as a two seat bike, by rights the pillion seat should have been fitted for the roadworthiness... but he was happy to ignore that bit!

Cheers for the info... just putting my 2 year old to bed, gonna have a cuppa, then out to the garage I go :)

  6. Either he's a jobsworth or rules are tight round your neck of the woods.

It'll all come good soon enough.

  7. He's in Australia, it's not our MOT

  8. That's what I meant.

  9. Wow that's strict. I alaways get an advisory saying 'exhaust noisey' - just the way it should be!:Cigar:

  10. Damn that tiny little flag on the corner of the avatar! :)

  11. Thanks all. As an ex-pat, I pity the people suffering under MOT - but then again I emigrated as a 7 year old, so have never actually had to experience it. Here in West Oz, your vehicles are only usually subject to examination if the coppers issue you wth a defect notice. However, I bought my bike online from a Melbourne dealer, so different state requires it be examined to be WA licensed. We are known as a 'Nanny State' for a reason... :/

  12. Hey Jim... will repost on my other thread to help anyone who might search down the track, but I was able to at least see the issue using one of those small inspection mirrors on a telescopic arm... the cable has indeed come loose from the barrel assembly. On the plus side, although I wasn't able to fully disassemble the tail unit (I couldn't work it out), I was able to locate the cable and have now positioned it near one of the bolts retaining the rider's seat. Quick tug with some needle nose pliers and I don't even have to remove the seat to swap the pillions seat for cowling. Not that it will happen often, but at least I have the option. Thanks for your assistance. Half midnight here... time for bed :)

  13. Glad to hear you sorted it mate. I'm sure whatever you done will be useful for many more to come

Nothing quite like working late on a new bike to 'bond' with it!

There's a downloadable workshop manual (mobile friendly) on here. Think it's in the technical thread? Anyway, that'll show what's needed if you ever decide to have a go at sorting it and get the tail off.

  14. Excellent - will be sure and grab it. The Mrs will be taking the little one to her folks place for a few days around Xmas... I can have guilt free time in the garage then :)
