Oberon rear wheel nut, eek.

  1. I suggest you get the dealer to do it - because that much force could strip thread or possibly snap the axle..

I assume you are standing on it - so assuming you are 10 stone - thats 120KGM or 1200NM which is 4 times the tightening torque!!

  2. Needs heat I'd suggest.

  3. Blimey, you're kind. [emoji6]

  4. This needs an impact wrench. The way you're going is completely wrong, you're going to destroy parts with a 6 foot bar

  5. Ai. See post #96.

Yesterday snapped a 3/4 socket, today snapped a 1 inch breaker bar knuckle.

Waited for the mandatory no show from the AA before taking it to the dealership.

    I'll keep you posted.

  6. I rode the bike to the dealership with a knackered tyre. The dealership removed the
nut by 1m extendable ratchet in a matter of seconds it tells me.

I can't make much sense of this given the trouble I had removing it and the tools it broke - breaker bar knuckles, sockets and reducing adapter sockets on different sized bars.

When I got the bike back I was able to remove the 230nm tightened nut by hand tools on my own yet I couldn't remove it at all with the help of two people prior to taking it in.

I'd used the Clarke gun only on nuts I couldn't budge by hand previously so I was really surprised how easily it removed the nut at 230nm when I retightened it after getting it back and just playing round with the gun.

The dealership suggested dodgy cheapo tools as the reason for my failure to remove it in the first instance but I'm not so sure.

I wonder whether riding it in helped but there's no logic to that. Both heat and hot water failed in helping me to remove it in the first instance.

So, if you can't budge the nut, ride it to the dealership.

  8. I read this thread and was dreading taking off the back wheel for a new tyre at the weekend, adding to the fear was my local tyre place telling me all the problems they've had with single siders in the past.

I bought the Motomfg socket and used with the Lidl impact driver I bought a couple of months back and it came off first attempt with no bother, did try a 2ft breaker bar for a laugh first and it wasn't budging.

Impact driver for me all the way now.

  9. I prefer a breaker bar.... But a big long bugger!

  10. Breaker bar with a 3.5m scaffold pole did the job for mine.

  11. This comment and the previous from Nelson are simply the wrong way.
11 foot pipe on a breaker bar, WTF? This is how you damage parts putting massive strain on everything. Impact puts a tiny fraction of that pressure and works instantly. It is the proper tool for this job.
Do not encourage people to put ever longer bars and stacked up adapters

  12. I know, worked though [emoji23]

  13. Mine works fine and zero damage on a correctly fitted nut!
What did they do in the olden days I wonder?

  14. They used to shite in a hole at the bottom of the garden in the olden days, but you wouldn't do it now would you ?
    :)

  15. No, no I wouldn't.

  16. Who's garden...?

  17. Any convenient one :)

  18. I'll join the "bastard wheel nut club"

I have removed it before while on a tour using the nut and a 2 foot breaker bar. "Fatter than me" mate sat on the bike holding the rear brake and my 16 stone stood on the bar...off it came no problems. I replaced the nut using just arm strength which i doubt was 230nm

5000 miles later the tyre is fooked so tonight tried the same technique but with a 18 year old skinny yoof sat on the bike holding the rear brake, big push and as wheel spins i end up falling off the bar as the end snapped off.....bollocks. Tried an air hammer gun (probably wrong term) at a mates garage and all it did was chew the mount on the removal nut

Off to tyre place tomorrow to see if they can shift it

  19. So glad I have avoided the single swing arm scenario. Looks pretty but all this strife'
