999 999 Newbie, What Do I Need To Know?

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Nic, Oct 13, 2016.

  1. glad it is not the 749s, but not good on any bike which has had time and effort put into it... 1.5 - 2k is still a lil serious :anguished:

  2. Only have the eBay pics as it just got put in the garage and taken appart when I got it back home but here it is.

Im sure the paint won't be to everyone's taste but I like it

  3. I wish it was the 749 as the 48 took me 2 years to rebuild and had around 10k spent on it!

  4. I like that.. Don't normally go for loud schemes but that looks good

  5. The fairings come off really quickly once you get the hang of the metal spigot that engages in the rubber grommet. Top tip is to liberally grease or Vaseline the grommet. Then it comes off and goes back on quickly and easily.

  10. OR, just fitted the Mivv decat pipe and have a clean set of DP filters ready to be fitted. The bike has a new coil after the front cylinder shut down and is now ready to go to Rich Llewellyn for a service/set up and CJS for a remap. Had to get a new rear shock as it started leaking and went a little mad in the ebay shop selling the shock also buying some new forks and a new shock for the 748 both of which also started leaking this summer (Piricambi in Italy, new Showa shocks for each bike at £140 delivered (cheaper than a rebuild) and the new TiN GD051 forks were only £440 -25% of Ducati's price and not that much cheaper than a rebuild. This means the trip to Clutton Hill has to be deferred so as not to attract the wrath of swmbo, two bikes was a step too far IHO so the costs are monitored:smilingimp::sweat:. A suspension set up is also to be done as it feels like it has been lowered at the back and raised at the front, after the 748 it feels like a touring bike. However, I keep finding that the speedo is reading three figures and have had to add a bar end mirror for better following traffic awareness. Will be out on it tomorrow. It becomes more beautiful by the day, have to say much prefer the pre facelifted versions, perhaps closer to Terblanche's idea?.

  11. Totally agree.
So many people say they prefer the facelift version but I don't see it. Yes, I rather like the red frame but that's about it. I don't even find myself hankering after a black swingarm.

As you say, the pre-facelift bike is closer to Terblanche's original concept.

  12. When the 999 first came out, the looks were extremely controversial but if you read the reviews written at the time, even the severest critics of the 999's looks concede that it was a better bike, both in terms of performance and handling. So. it does seem as though you do need to get the suspension settings looked at.

  13. OR first rides today with the decat pipe fitted and the engine is smoother, less vibes with a little bit more torque, I can only assume that having the one cat remaining on the horiz cylinder was adversely affecting that cylinders gas flow. The remap is becoming very tempting indeed

  14. What end can do you have?

  15. Wow, that's good. Did you have to dismantle very much to swap the pipe??
