899 Brakes

  1. There's is 100% definitely a difference between 1 and 2

In 2 the bike stands up when trail braking.

I tested it by running in 2 and not using rear brake and the rear disc was still hot - it is definitely intervening even when front brake only is applied

In mode 1 the rear disc wasn't hot so confirms my findings - mode 2 is combined

I hated the feel so much with mode 2 I was on the verge of trading in for s1000rr

Changing to abs 1, TC 3 and EBC 2 has made me love the bike

  2. To clarify, Im referring to ABS setting 1 and 2 by the way (not EBC as mentioned in post prior to mine).

  3. Mine is a 1299s...
I have just spent a week riding a BMW S1000R which has ABS. The lever feel was tons better than that on the Pani. Firm lever with good byte.
Don't get me wrong; the Pani stops very well when asked to, it's just the lever feel I dislike. I think it's down to the cheap Brembo master cylinder. I have had the clutch master changed due to it needing regular bleeding. The replacement (nominally the same unit) is night and day better than the original so I wonder about the master on the brake side.
Every now and then when I am out riding on the Pani I do hard braking exercises just to see how fast the bike will stop and so that I can stop it quickly if the need arises. I agree with Phil in that I don't think I have ever managed to provoke the ABS on dry clean roads, yet I perceive that the bike stops just as quickly as my previous RSV4 did.

  4. The 1299s is a different beast. It has different calipers and cornering ABS (the Bosch inertial thingy adjusts abs allowing for much more than just wheel speed). The brakes on my 1299s haven't caused me any issues with the ABS set at 2 or 3, but the 959 really struggled by comparison on any setting above 1.

  5. I'll say it again, the 899 does NOT have linked brakes, it states it in the manual. If someone has a hot rear brake then it's because of pad drag or sticking calliper. I'm not calling people liars deliberately but it's there in black and white

  6. They must be telling porkies then?

    Taken from ducati PR bumf

    Ducati Transmission

    • ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM) 9MP: The Bosch 9MP ABS standard on the 959 Panigale is a latest-generation system with two channels that performs combined braking with control of rear wheel lifting to guarantee not only shorter braking distances, but also the greatest stability during braking. Specifically intended for sport use, the 9MP ABS offers three levels of operation, each associated with a Riding Mode; in the Race mode, the system works only on front discs to allow advanced track braking techniques for expert riders.

  7. To be honest, that (like most PR nonsense) can be read either way. Just because the abs works on both or just front doesn't mean that the front lever controls both. The combined bit might refer to the fact it stops the front wheel locking whilst also preventing the rear from lifting.... who knows!... I don't!

  8. Subscribing. I've always thought the front and rear brakes were not linked on the Panigale but I only really ever use race mode and setting one so maybe in other settings it's possible.

Does anyone saying the brakes have poor feel use the stock levers? I find that no other levers are as good as the stock ones, even Ducati Performance levers feel a little squishy in comparison. I have a new S1000RR and whilst the brakes feel pretty awesome on the road, they are definitely not as good as the Pani on track. It might just be because the bike is quite a bit heavier though.

  9. The very latest ABS systems integrate with the traction control and apply rear brake pressure to prevent the wheel spinning this may be the cause of a hot disk rather than any "combined" braking.

  10. 1299 and 899 use completely different abs systems , 1299 in certain modes are linked , as far as I am aware the 899 are not linked, I only use the front brake on my 1299 but have brake dust deposits on my rear wheel so that tells me they are linked , never had the same on my 899 and never thought they were linked. 959 don't have one so can't comment.

  11. Yes Royal, as the OP, I do have the original levers on the bike and just don't get much feel.
