  1. I'm heading towards choosing an 1198SP for next year's race bike.

What do I need to know? Would this be a good move?

  2. @aldaviz might be able to help hes just sold his race bike, sold it as it was getting rather expensive to race i belive.

  3. What class are we talking ? From my perspective, the 1098/1198 is more flexible and potentially more forgiving to set up than the Panigale. The later 1198sp electronics are less basic than the 1098R (although in 2008 the 1098 were class leading). My 3 pennyworth for what it's worth. Andy

  4. I've been in the Hungarian 1000 Open championship this year on my 996SPS and want to continue next season with a more competitive bike.

  5. In my opinion then, I think that the 1198sp is a very good choice and I wish you good luck. Andy

  6. Thanks Andy. Have we met? I live in Wokingham (as well as Budapest).

If they are quite advanced in terms of electronics, do they benefit from a Power Commander at all?

  7. I've gone on and on and on about the SP for years - the last proper big capacity true Ducati Superbike if you ask me.

The electornics are better than the R, DTC is more refined and the quickshifter is more than up to the job.

I've just spent about 12 months making mine in to a track only bike. Have a look here: http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/the-1198spr-build.38490/

Not too sure about the power commander, but setting up on a Dyno with a fully open ECU would help. Removing a little power/torque in low gears and low RPM would probably make you faster. It has a LOT of torque!!

  8. Mate, I've seem to have been around for ever. Certainly lived in the Farnborough area for a lot of years so very possible our paths may have crossed. The 1198 is a different generation so no need for a Power Commander as the ECU is directly programmable and depending on how sophisticated you want to go, you could even get it done by post. 9. Just read that thread and the photos are pure porn.

  10. Thanks fella, I'm looking forward to getting her on the track - soon!!

Hope the thread helps answer a few of your questions, one of the reasons I did it. If not, ask me on the thread and I'll answer it. Helps share the info. ;-)

  11. I know I will. Cheers.

  12. Gearboxes are cheese, and the Ducati QS destroys them. Get a proper nova (??) box and a decent HM QS

whats not to like about 170hp and 92lbft with just a system and filter?!

  13. Another option is to buy an 1198 and modify. The sp options are upgrades you'd make anyway and then you're not paying a premium for a limited bike.
My understanding is its just a larger tank, ttx rear, slipper and qs.
I bought an s and added the racing bits. Bought it an a salvage auction and got it together. I have to add, that I hate the Ducati qs. It got to the point that I just turned it off. I'll probably go to HM next season.

  14. Plus Alloy tank

  15. What does the R have as upgrades over the SP?

  16. Rarity. If I remember correctly you are looking at low single figures sold, certainly in the UK. If you could find one for sale, you will pay a premium that is probably not worth the higher spec for your intended use. As has already been said, you can buy individual upgrades where it is a genuine benefit. Andy

  17. I appreciate the R's exclusivity, but what specifically is the "extra" on an R, over an SP?

  18. Looks like a single seat and an extra 10bhp after a cursory scan of the specs on the Ducati website model archive. Andy

  19. Thanks Andy. Could that 10bhp be attributed to the ECU/Termignoni combination that the R has standard?

  20. Not sure if the 1198R came with a "race" exhaust in a separate box like the 1098R which released an extra 5hp (185bhp) but you could be looking at a few exotic material internals and slightly different ecu programme. A quick google should bring up a couple sites that can provide the anorak information :D. Andy
