1200 DVT Engine Stalled While Clutch In (occasionally)

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Oeths, Sep 6, 2016.

  1. I have a very unstable idle on my bike, but not the issue with it dying (this happened on my old bike and was the kill switch)

  2. All my Ducatis have had lumpy idles. And I've had most made since 1996 (monsterx3, ST, Multi, 748, 996, 848x2, multix3)

  3. As I understand it, you're never going to get a metronomic idle out of the Ducati firing order/configuration but the motor shouldn't just die, especially when set to the correct idle speed.

  4. I'm not gonna touch that in case they blame me for this defect.

I have no idea man, it sounds like not enough air inside the cylinder.

My idle speed is around 1300-1400rpm

mine is not lumpy most of the time.

My bike idle rpm will go up a bit high and turn to lower rpm then go back to 1300rpm

  5. I had the same problem with my Multi. Dealer and Ducati UK had no clue. Tried all the things you tried and still kept happening.

  6. Use lemon law to get refund ?

  7. I don't know what lemon law is, is that a Singapore term? (By the way, that's alot of bike for the streets of Singapore, where do you go for a blast, Malaysia?)

  8. Lemon laws” are laws protecting consumers against defective goods that fail to conform to contract, or meet satisfactory quality or performance standards at the time of purchase, colloquially known as “lemons”

Yes, we normally go Malaysia or Thailand

  9. "Repeatedly" fail to conform to contract and "repeatedly" fail satisfactory or quality and performance standards.....is what they will look at, and it's at manufactures discression, as the law states that under warranty, they could in theory keep trying or keep fixing it. It's a minefield in the UK to get full refund, but possibly alternate bike may be easier??

  10. To the original question, My 1000 does the same thing, no rhyme or reason and no consistency.

When i park up for the night I always put the kill switch on, a few times the next morning I've then moved the switch to fire up and nothing so I have flicked it up and down a few times and all is well.

Because it costs nothing I would check the kill switch by cleaning it up and seeing if there is any issue, I would also at the same time clean up and check the sidestand kill switch as being underneath it gets the crud (some acf50 might help with this once cleaned.

Both of the above are time only costs and for me are the first places to check.

  11. The worse thing is, seems OP has had back to the deal, you know the Ducati Specialist with all their highly trained techs, and had DUK input and it still happens and he's still taking ideas from an internet forum...come on DUK, sort it out!

  12. He doesn't seem willing to act on any ideas himself though, only to pass them on to the dealer and they're going to love that...

  13. Fair point. 3 options on that:
    1) Maybe OP feels unable to do some of the stuff, doesn't work on bikes
    2) Its under warranty, and they are the experts
    3) Its under warranty, let THEM solve it, why should I?!

Or maybe tried a few and just not been successful

  14. I'll try if dealer decide to ignore me.

The dealer seems not happy when i talk about suggestion from forum members

    I did.
I tried removed EVAP, re-programmed keys, wiggle sidestand switch while engine running on first gear.
The dealer didn't really wanna listen to what I suggest.

    Yes as per above.
I don't want the dealer to push the blame to me for causing the defect

  15. My recomendation is that you push regardless, because in my experience in last 5 or so years

    1. On my 1200 I have replaced 3 kill switches because of similar symptoms like yours, the switch costs £60 in the UK and needs the tank to be removed - say 1 hour work - because the wires are underneath, some dealers do not like to do this work because its too small and they sometimes just open the switch and 'clean it' - ask them to replace it properly and ask to see the old one also.

    2. The sidestand switch also causes this issue and I have had 2 replacements, again its a small part cost and its even easier. Ask to see the old one (mark it with a pen).

    Try these.

  16. Oeths, Sometimes forums can appear hostile when trying to help but help most are trying to do.

Possibly go back to the dealer and say look, both of us seem stumped here, the next logical step is I refuse the bike as it is unfit for purpose before that happens what can you suggest? By doing this the dealer has options, record the option he gives you in some way even if it is to ask him to email and confirm the auction

At this point I would also ask Ducati UK to become involved through customer services, Highlight the bike cutting out when you are riding is a safety risk and is well known, then ask them what can they do for you and or to assist the dealer in resolving this. Sometimes it's not you asking but how you ask .

Were it me by now I would be looking to return it for another or cancel the deal completely as unfit for purpose.

  17. He's paid a lot of money for this bike and is quite right to try to get the dealer to sort it out.

  18. Indeed but the dealer is unlikely to take kindly to all sorts of theories from some foreign motorbike forum.

  19. Thanks mate, that's what I'm gonna do.

    Exactly
If the bike is out of warranty for sure I will try all the suggestions here.
In Singapore most of the bike dealers here like to push the blame to rider for 3rd party parts installed on bike when claiming warranty.

    Yes
The dealer told me don't follow forum ideas.

Update : bike is with dealer
Ducati factory ask to open up airbox and throttle body to inspect air leakage
will update when i collect back the bike

  20. While I know it's painful for you, this is one of the best threads on the forum. It's like some sort of murder mystery thriller. We want to know whodunnit (or "whatdunnit").

    Edge of the seat stuff.
