899 16.2l Fuel Tank

  1. I properly ran out of fuel a few days ago. Always pushed my luck seeing how many miles I could do once the fuel light had come on. Normally around 40 with .5 to 1L
remaining when on the motorway. My bike cut out at a 1 mile to the services sign. I had only done 34 miles since the light came on but had been riding harder than normal. I coasted for awhile and managed to restart it before dropping below 20. That didn't last long but with one more restart I got all the way to the pump where it cut out for the last time. I brimmed it and it only took 16.21L. The amount of times I must have nearly ran out from working out range on a 17L tank. Oh well I was lucky considering and hope this thread stops anyone else making the same mistake.

  2. Through experience I panic at 15 miles once the light comes on.
Twice I've had to get someone to come out to me with a jerry can :(

  3. I ran mine out in Luxembourg @ 150 miles

  4. On the S the light comes on at hundred miles and I'm on vapours twenty miles later and can feel it about to die. The R is about twenty miles less to a tank!

  5. I'm surprised you get that much the way you ride them mano..:upyeah:

  6. I have noticed that the light goes on randomly depending on the incline too. I've had it go on and off a few times before deciding to stay on.

  7. Also happens if you give it some beans from a standstill. I had about 8 miles on the trip and it reset after doing that.

I've contemplated filling up a 1 litre plastic bottle as an emergency backup when I fill up for a long trip. It's always the motorways where you're most likely to get stuffed as you're stuck between junctions.

  8. Closest I've got was squeezing 280km out of a tank in Ukraine. The light came on 75km from the station. Didn't think I would make it but was about a 1/4 litre short of an empty tank I think.

  9. This gets me into thinking we need an international, "i've fked up & ran out of fuel hand sign"...for passing good samaritans to help us out.

  10. Two handed wringing a cloth motion? think Chinese burns.

  11. 959 was doing 130miles before the light, and I ran out totally in Belgium on 161. A local on a bike did stop within 5mins despite this being about 10pm on a Sunday in the middle of nowhere!

1299s round Oulton ran out after 10miles on reserve (9m45s)....

  12. Fuel light on equals wet mode on, might be the difference between riding onto the forecourt or pushing it on

Reckon it buys you 5 miles

  13. I ran out of petrol having managed 1.5 miles from home on my brand new 899 first ride out from delivery last year, suffice to say I was not best pleased. Dealership said it was not allowed to carry the bikes full of fuel but ffs I was heading to my nearest petrol station, was on a busy road with no pavement, ended up pushing the bike and abandoning it in a remote driveway whilst I walked home! To make things worst my mobile had no charge!! Happy days
