899 Charging Battery Via Dda

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Cake, Oct 26, 2016.

  1. As its coming into winter I want to keep the battery healthy and while I know I can hardwire straight to battery I was wondering if anyone charges via the DDA port?

Optimate do a converter to SAE so you can plug straight in and charge away and as far as I know this is always live.

Does anyone know of any issues or potential dangers?

Is canbus enablement just to keep the socket alive when the ignition is off? so i'm assuming its not required here?

  2. The short answer is no.

Someone with a more detailed response will apply the reasoning. My limited knowledge about it refers to the fact sharing a cable that goes to the ECU and shoving an electrical charge through it isn't a great idea. Buy and fit a £20 cable or risk blowing an expensive ECU.

  3. The Ducati charger plugs in under the pillion seat

  4. No canbus issues. The DDA has a +ve and -ve that goes straight to battery. You can use the 4 way connector to charge the battery.

  5. Just plugged mine in , it's under the plastic flap

  6. So by using the optimate cable (same as what comes the Ducati charger) I can run that with a standard Optimate 2 charger without risk of destroying anything?

Really I just like the tidiness of it but would hardcore if there is a risk.

What kit are you using above?

  7. It's the charger that Ducati supplied for the lithium battery on my 1299,it's not a Ducati branded charger.

  8. In short, I'm wrong?

Pretty sure I read some folk on here saying a big no to doing it.

  9. Post #3 says it all. The Ducati branded charger comes with a plug for the DDA socket. One thing to consider however, is should you need to run something like a small pump to (re)inflate a tyre, the direct wiring to the battery is very useful if your pump shares the same plug/socket as mine does. 10. Jim2wheels, you are partly right. Bikes like the 848, 1098, 1198 use the same connector for the Ducati Data Analyser that plugs under the pillion seat. Looks identical to the diagnostic port used on the Pani and new MS but is wired up completely differently.

  11. Yep looks all to be fine then :)

This is the item - SAE to Ducati Power Lead and even says allows connection to the 12V power sockets fitted to some Ducati motorcycles. It can be a simpler alternative to fitting the O-1 eyelet lead to the battery.

Just wanted to be sure this applies to the Panigale!

Ill have this on for charging and then swap to a USB outlet for charging my satnav when travelling next year :)

  12. Ride it! Battery chargers! :anguished:

  13. Forgive my lack of knowledge but is my 1299 OEM battery a lead acid type battery?
How do you store your batteries during the winter? Have taken my battery off the bike and stored in our bedroom, chilly but dry.

Living in Norway in case you wonder:rolleyes:

  14. The R with lithium battery has a small extension down by the engine case to charge from. I'm sure It also comes with a separate extension to take it to the back by the DDA port? Might be confused as I don't use it but it's not sharing the DDA??

  15. Dave - I use the DDA plug on the Li-on charger that came with the R to charge mine up. I don't have the extension near the battery on mine but confirm the DA plug works a treat
