Engine Management Light

Discussion in 'Sport Classic' started by coldrobba, Oct 26, 2016.

  1. When i turn the ignition key i get the usual instrument light cycle come on, and the engine management turns off like it should. Then about 3 seconds later the engine management light comes back on before i turn the bike over. Now prior to it doing this, that light used to flicker on and off when i was manoeuvring the bike out ready to ride, like a loose connection has finally given up!

The bike runs fine by the way, no back fire etc.

Any ideas what it could be?

  2. What bike, age etc otherwise it's crystal ball time!

  3. Haha, Its a 2009 Sports Classic Biposto.

  4. Is the light on when riding the bike? You could try changing the relevant relay, but it could also be an issue (perhaps corrosion) in the wiring loom.

  5. Read the fault code using diagnostic software. Better than second guessing.

  6. Yeah, its on all the time now.

I don't have the software, where do i get this? I presume i then need to buy a cable.

  7. A Ducati dealer or workshop can connect to diagnostics & read error codes for you. Nelly at Cornerspeed is my 'go to guy' for this kind of thing, but may be a little far away for you.

  8. It would be interesting to know and perhaps @chrisw can tell us, if the ecu goes into some kind of default limp home mode if the engine management light comes on.
My 999 occasionally does something similar but I can clear it by switching the motor off for a few seconds, then back on. Either stopping to do this or coasting for a few seconds works equally well.
My reasoning is that if it clears that easily, there can't be too much wrong.
Also, I do have titanium bolts holding my rear disc, rather than the steel ones that are designed to activate the speed sensor. I have embedded steel ball bearings in silicone in the socket-cap heads to overcome that problem but the signal from them is inevitably somewhat weaker and I suspect it's something to do with that.

  9. My ECU work is with the IAW59M and IAW5AM as they are what my bikes use. There is no Limp Home Mode.

  10. That's good news (I think)

    Thanks Chris :)

  11. Doing a bit of reading, i think i will buy the cables and download the software to read the codes. Pretty usefull going forward.

  12. Reliable source for cables is LonElec. If you have an Android tablet you may find Scan5mx easiest to use.

  13. Would this be the cable Diagnostic Interface for GuzziDiag JPDiag DucatiDiag

I see mention of checking the polarity, i presume these will be all good!

  14. That's the kit you need. The polarity thing stems from a batch of Chinese Fiat Adaptors that had the fly led crocodile clip colours the wrong way round. I always advise to connect the red croco to the +ve terminal and the black croco to a good earth on the engine or frame.

  15. Nice one, thanks for the help.

I have just ordered one. Hopefully i can find out what the issue is, depending on how accurate the fault codes are.

  16. Do i need to change the pinout like below, or is this cable all set?

You'll see at the linked page below a picture identifying the operating pins on the OBD cable. The pin you need to check is #16, it is positive power so set your mm to ohms and connect one probe to pin 16 and the other to the red alligator clip. Now since the pinout image on that page is of the OBD cable you need to translate that to the female recepticle of your Fiat cable. I simply inserted a largish sewing needle into the corresponding female pin hole and connected the mm probe to it to check continuity. Check your negative while you're there too if you like, it's pin #5. Pin #7 is the K line which you needn't concern yourself with.

  17. With the LonElec kit you will be ready to go out of the box. The diagnostic cable uses the FTDI chipset so will work with all the diagnostic programs. My personal favourites are Ducatidiag for PC and TuneECU for android. For Scan5mx you need a bluetooth ELM327.

  18. That's good news. I was also trying to figure out the difference between Ducatidiag and TuneECU, it looks like you anticipated my next question!

  19. Im just going to keep this updated, future ref and all!

That cable is top notch, with the instructions from the website i connected first time.

I cleared 3 errors, 2 must have been in the past. Anyway after clearing them i get back the error P0105 - Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit Malfunction status DTC: A2
    Open Circuit, Shor circuit GND

I have ran out of light, so when i get back on it i will check the sensor under the instrument panel, and work back from here.
