Gearbox Issues with MTS 1200

  1. Bike is finally in at dealers for the gearbox drum selector to be replaced. Initially was booked in at Cobb and Jagger in Leeds but that was a total shambles and piss ups and breweries come to mind, so it's now in at Ducati Manchester and i've just made the 90 mile return trip on a teeny tiny Monster 696 (i'm 6ft 2 and 16 1/2 stone).

Basically after describing the symptoms to the service manager at Cobb and Jagger he knew exactly what the problem was as he had dealt with two other bikes with the same fault. He said he had a part in stock (quite surprising) and it would take three days which was fine for me as big trip planned mid July. So take the Friday off and rock up at opening time to swap my Multi for whatever courtesy bike they had available (please be a Panigale!). This is where it goes Pete Tong! So firstly no service manager, he's on holiday, no parts in stock or ordered as they haven't test rode the bike yet, and sorry we can't do it until July anyway as we are so busy. Monumental waste of time all round. To be fair the service lady was very apologetic but fairly insistent that it was never booked in for the repair just a check.

Tried Ducati Aylesbury (where it came from) and they were fully booked until mid July too so Ducati Manchester to the rescue. Hopefully it will be done and will be ready for collection by the weekend or Monday at the latest, service guy had ordered in various gearbox selectors as a precaution too so job should be ok. Fingers crossed!

  2. Picked up bike today, new drum and gear selectors fitted. Took nearly a week longer than expected but bike was cleaned and ready to go first thing this morning. Tried to provoke it to drop 2nd gear but now rock solid. Only thing is that the box seems a bit clunkier but I expect it to bed in as I put some miles on it. It wasn't mentioned but the back brake now works and is strong enough to hold the bike in an incline with out using the front.

  3. Was that done under warranty, or did you have to pay? And if so, how much was it - there could be a few of us going that route I think!

  4. All under warranty thank god, pretty sure it would have been a huge bill if it it wasn't. I did't ask too many questions as i was knackered after 90 miles on the mini monster I had as a courtesy bike, but I imagine three days labour plus parts would be fairly expensive. To be honest if it was out of warranty it would have been traded by now. Got about 20 months left on that and at that point i'll be seriously considering my options again.

  5. More reports of gearbox problems specifically a spring that centres the gear selector lever breaking (from a Dutch MTS owners group on Facebook)

  6. Hi I've just sent my mts1200 gt back to the dealer as I was in sixth gear at 60 mph and dropped in to fifth gear and my gear Lear dropped with a load clunk I had no drive with a grinding noise not to pleased they have come back and told me that it's my fault as I must be riding the bike roughly this is a 2013 model and only has 1331 miles on the clock I have done a further 2000 miles in two months, I'm thinking of selling it as I don't think I can trust ducati if I take my bike abroad.

  7. I realize you posted this a long time ago but I just bought a 2012 MTS with 1900 miles on it from a guy who proudly claimed he "hadn't had it over 65mph" in the 4 years he owned it. Suffice it to say, I had it up to well past that on my first run. Alas, the bike keeps sliding into neutral when I'm in 2nd gear specifically at the point the RPM's are backing down... super dangerous. I jumped online and read a couple of forum posts and see plenty of evidence that this is a systemic problem with the 2012 MTS gearbox. Unfortunately, my dealer in the U.S. and now the Ducati Manufacturer's Representative is denying any knowledge of this problem. It troubles me because I know that's not true. But more importantly, I know some of my brothers-on-wheels have probably gotten hurt or worse as a result of this defect. I've been riding for 40 years and haven't seen anything quite so dangerous. The failure always happens when your at high RPM then slowing for a turn/twisty. With the immediate loss of engine breaking power, the bike instantly shifts left or right 3-5'. My guess is some have gotten seriously hurt or worse and no one would ever know it wasn't their fault. It could easily pass for "rider-error." I'm not going to let it stand. I'm going to file suit against Ducati and want to track down every case of this malfunction. In that regard, would you mind sending me the name of the dealer that fixed your bike and perhaps your VIN#? If you prefer to send this privately, my email is [email protected]. I really appreciate in advance any help you could provide. Best, Kevin

  14. @KBaird ......there is an option to 'multi-quote' posts rather than start a new post to quote each ;-)
Good luck.........stand fast and with some effort you will win!

  15. What model years do you think this affects I.e. is it all pre dvt model years or just earlier years prior to dvt.
Keep us posted with the outcome.
