Thing is the hole isn't round, it's been ovaled at the top. Bike pretty much stripped now. Wheels ready for tyres to come off tomorrow then find a powder coater and get front repaired.
TBH mate,,i would think that welding /threading that hole will do more damage than just leaving it,, that is a tension load on that bolt, not affected by the opening,, one hole out of 6 , X2 ??
if yoo put too much heat into that wheel it will always be a risk,,, more so than a single hole being elongated in a place that does not matter.
But the hole is oval. If I try to tap it will go off centre then when I insert the Helicoil it will be out of line.
It will true up as you drill/cut thread. Be careful to keep square. The new thread that the helicoil screws into is bigger than the worn hole. If you're not confident to do it take it to engineering firm. Take disc in too with some bolts. They can use disc as template to get helicoil spot on.
Never done Helicoil but seen the clips and know theory. Would just rather first time was front brake disc on a rather expensive part.
Straight forward and easy to do but a bike/car mechanic or engineer shouldn't charge a lot. 30 minute job max. Make sure helicoil is secure in new thread with loctite as Ive had them unscrew when undoing bolt at later date.
you are digging your self a hole there mate,, not nesassary , from what i can see the thread is good,, it is a tensile load on the thread which wont be affected by oval on the lip.
i'd have to drill out one of the disc holes too and i think it would stand out its a different bolt. i'd rather have a Helicoil.
