Other items can excel at its intended purpose. Ferrari is faster than a Kia. It could also offer lots of other benefits or disadvantages. A expensive tv shows the same film but it would be clearer , brighter , better sound etc. A watch tells the time. That's its one Job in life isn't it? As long as it's accurate then I'm missing something?
If your £200 watch is a Quartz it will probably more accurate then a rolex, you have to appreciate the craftsmanship to understand why bods buy expensive watches, some are brought for chav status especially rolex (it's the biggest seller) but the likes of Patek Philippe are not on the chav list and goes unnoticed on your wrist, I sold one I had for several years not only did I get the joy of wearing it but the profit paid for my multi, now does your isa return that ! Certain watch makers like panerai make limit batches of 1000 units then they destroy the tooling this keeps the value high, buying right is better then Money in the bank.
I don't wear a watch so I've never understood the prices they attract. Good points about appreciation and the craftsman ship.
I have a hublot that is certified to a depth of 4000m and tested in a roxer tank to 5000m, highly useless as it only ever gets wet in the shower but it's a work of art and craftsmanship all the same
Same here, I have a Breitling Avenger Sea wolf which goes to some horrific depth and even has a 'helium valve' built in that moves to release pressure! Never even got the watch wet! The mechanics of it though are what I love, it's exactly about craftmanship and not about it doing better or worse at the given job, infact it is less accurate than a £10 Casio! A luxury item for sure but I own it and plan to keep it my whole life!
Bought my Sea Dweller back in 1994 and love it. I'll never sell it. Got this Panarai 233 more recently.
You had to resurrect this post didn't you ? Bas***ds the lot of you ! Like my mother and her mother before her, I cannot wear a mechanical chronograph watch, try as I might. Tried under controlled conditions a wide range of commercial to hand crafted, cheap to eye wateringly expensive watches and although the issue varies the end result is the same, the watch cannot keep any semblance of accuracy. There are some really nice quartz movement watches out there but there isn't the pedigree or cache. Jealous ? You bet . Andy
what you need andy is a demagnifier . Static is not the friend of a mechanical watch . Im ok but the wife is always fully charged and her watch gains massively after a day or so .
I have a soft spot for a nice horological marvel. I have a nice little pension pot in my safety deposit box that are on the up each year. As someone's mentioned on the right piece the returns are only equitable to property investments. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Should that be demagnetiser, a sort of bracelet thing ? My grandmother had a watch made during the 1930s where all the metal parts of the movement were made from various carat yellow gold, 9 and 14 if I remember correctly. Retailers today are a little less flexible than they were 45 years ago so an expensive mistake if I try a "solution" that doesn't solve the problem which to be fair I cannot explain nor can anyone give me a medical reason why. Andy
I bought a SD4000 in August, absolutley love it. Rolex have just increased their prices on 1st Nov 10% in the UK. I dont view it as an investment but nice to know it will maintain its price, I wear it every day and gives me a lot of pleasure.
yeah thats the word but not the item .One of these I often use them if a mechanical watch is running fast or slow . https://www.amazon.co.uk/Watch-Demagnetizer-Demagnetize-Repair-Voltage/dp/B00OJZOC0Q
Just got this, waited a while for it, it's the new grey side of the moon with a piece of real meteorite as the face. Andy @Android853sp you might want to check out the new master chronograph range as they're certified to magnetic resistance to 15000 gauss. And Christmas is just around the corner!
Back in February I wrote on this thread about how I couldn't see how a watch could be worth buying etc etc. Well I talk crap it appears and I since purchased a Semi expensive watch 2 months ago to mark my engagement and now wear it everyday.
My wife bought me this for my 50th, it's a 50th anniversary James Bond limited edition. My dad used to smuggle Rolex when he served in the merchant navy, I remember as a young lad commenting that the raised magnifying glass was useful for old duffers with dodgy eyesight, funny how things turn out!
So what are your top three performing assets ? If that's not a rude question. Just interested to hear what is growing. A couple of John Harrison's ?
