Help! Which way to turn fuel tap off? And just neutral light on with Ignition.

  1. I'd like to remove my recently bought 900SS, 1995 fuel tank, to hopefully try and check the valve clearances.

The fuel tap is a knurled knob which I had to use pliers on to turn it clockwise, (looking from underneath), I thought it would stop turning as the tap was closed but it didn't. Does anybody know if I now need a new fuel tap?

Also when I turn the key to ignition the only warning light to come on is the neutral, I had a 1992 900SS years ago, and I'm sure most of the other warning lights came on, to check they were working. Am I mistaken?
    Thanks.

  2. clockwise is correct and sadly does mean something is damaged if it doesn't stop turning. You should also get an ignition light, an oil pressure light*and possibly a 'sidestand down' light. Chances are a bit of a wriggle, a clean and a spray and others will miraculously come to life!

    *as Alex quite rightly said.

  3. Pretty sure the sidestand and possibly oil pressure lights should come on. Want me to traipse out the the bike and check?

  4. Thanks, chris and humbug. No rush though. I'll try WD40 and a wiggle first.

  5. Ah, looks like I've got a bit more work to do.

  6. I have a spare fuel tap out in the garage which has a missing fuel pipe fitting - Im thinking the actual gubbins inside is still ok tho?

  7. Thanks, think I'll try mdina first, £33, I'll phone them tomorrow and get my 737 400 21A belts and rocker cover gaskets too, the thought of not rebuilding the tap correctly and it leaking puts me off.

  8. I have a complete warning light circuit board spare (it is under the cover of the big white plug in the back of the speedo housing / dash.....)

And I have had to do a lot of wiring fault tracing so I know the wiring diagram fairly well if you need help....

Regarding the fuel tap, some people have fitted an alternative which I think (don't quote me though) was something to do with being a gas fitting....cost pence in comparison to the OEM one....but you could always fit a thread adaptor and stick something like a british bike tap in it (one without too many sticky out bits)....but make sure you don't reduce the bore diameter....

  9. I ordered a tap from Mdina today, but I think I'll fit another tap that's easy to get to, as well as an external fuel filter, thats after I do something about the leaking fuel tank, at the back, sort of around the drain.

The love and goodwill I would like to pass on to the top bloke who sold me this vgc Ducati last week.......grrrr.
Suppose it is 17 years old and when I drained the recently filled up tank, 3 gallons plus a bit which included an inch of rusty water in the bottom of a ragu jar, no wonder it was a mess inside.
Reckon it will be a sealant job or Andrew at Mdina mentioned Baines do an exchange tank with a new base and all painted up, wonder how much?
    Thanks Arquebus.

  10. Fit a Facet pump from Fulepumpsonline on the outside of the tank, that way you can have two filters....

  11. Think I'll just keep the pump inside the tank, It's about the only thing that's seems to be working on the bike!

  12. You can seal the tank good again with POR-15. :upyeah: Did mine last Xmas, the water collects in the back two corners where it steadily rots through the seams as you have found out?

There is a good writeup re: POR-15 on Ducati.ms supersport sticky section, will be a cheaper fix than having Baines seal and spray it?

  13. Project Superspurt

  14. You can buy fuel taps from Ducati - I bought one a couple of years ago and I'm sure it was only £15...

  15. I have no doubt that a Baines exchange tank would be a sturdy job but tanks also turn up secondhand for around £60 or more if tip top. If they are available from works for around £15 then that's a great bit of advice and the easiest route. I will try and confirm today or if someone beats me to it could you post findings please.
