Is it ok to use 10W/40 or even 15W/40 oil in an older 900?

  1. Was wondering if anybody has used these slightly 'heavier' oils and if their engine survived or does it have to be Agip F1 or something similar in a 900 Monster?SS engine?
It's just you can get 5L of semi synthetic 10W/40 from VW dealers for about tuppence.

  2. I have had my 750SS for three years and run it on Silkolene Super4 10-40 Semi Synthetic......and the previous owner used the same.

    About 30K on the clock.

  3. That'll do me. Cheers

  4. as above, a good semi 10w40 will be fine. Some fully synthetics can cause clutch slip, but Shell and Motul are fine from experience.
A word of warning about car oils though. They aren't designed to work with/as gearbox lubricants and will get mullered having to do that job. Stick with motorcycle specific oils only

  5. I think most oils on Ducati cluctches would casue clutch slip as most are of the dry variety

Most car oils are not suitable for bikes with wet clutches as they have friction modifiers etc in them , but this begs the question would they be suitable for a dry cluch bike ?

  6. Wasn't any good on a Moto Guzzi Le Mans clutch.....(not mine, I hasten to add)

    AL.

  7. You weren't clutching a bottle of alcohol when you typed this were you? Never knew there were so many ways to spell 'clutches' / 'clutch'

  8. How about Motul semi - synthetic? any good with wet clutches?

  9. I blame eet on me keebord

  10. I use Motul Semi synth 10/40 in my 748. It does me all right, 5k and runs sweet as a nut.....

  11. Er yeah...... sorry, i'd picked up on the 2nd post being a 750...
Problem with car oils is that they're not designed to handle the forces and shear actions put into them lubing a gearbox. They can break down very quickly.
Motul 5100 semi works just fine with wet clutches noddy. The 7100 fully does to.

  12. Ran 10w50 5100 in my 900 carby for a while? Worked well, the only prob being the slightly thinner grade meant it used a bit more oil?

Would make a good winter grade oil tho!

+1 on using a motorcycle grade oil, dont skimp on the stuff FFS...

  13. Got plenty of Motul 5000 10w40 might give it a go

  14. I've been using Rock Oil 20w50 in the SS for a while without any issues.

  15. Damn. After previous experiences with oil threads for bevels I was looking forward to a proper heated discussion. You lot are far too polite and respectful!!

  16. Maybe Chris we've a) grown up -not likely or b) been round the block somany times with this that we're too tired to bite

  17. Might have to start a 'What's the best place for my tax disc' thread. They're always good for a laugh.

  19. This place is extremely civilised. I also own a 1250 Bandit (stop laughing at the back!) and the forum for them is so explosive it's sometimes like the Gaza strip when it cracks off. Probably due to the demographic that one associates with that model of bike (except me of course :D)

  20. MY TWOPENNYWORTH:
Any good oil will work in the dry clutch motors, avoid car oils in the wet clutch motors for obvious reasons.
As for the car oils not being suitable for motorcycles because of the gearbox aspect i strongly dissagree, lots of cars have gears in the engine driving pumps and cams etc. the older minis and suchlike actually had the gearbox inside the sump using the same oil!
Personally, i use mobil 1, 0W-40 in all my dry clutch bikes and have never had a problem, not even with high oil usage. i feel if the motor is using oil at a high rate its time to look at the rings with a bundle of £20's. also with the thinner oils there is a big argument that this liberates more power and because it is being pumped round quicker gives more oil cooling to the internal parts.
Along the line of oil additives the only suggestion i have is to use a ZDDP additive if the oil is SL rated or higher. they have started removing certain nasties from the oil that could cause premature cam and rocker wear (from SL on approx 2008). Most race oils do not come under this rating so it does not apply! all part of saving the planet.
