I started to learn kitesurfing Did a crash course in Portugal Couldn't get the hang of letting go to stop it didn't feel right, I ate a lot of sand
We are so lucky here in the UK, we have some fantastic beaches and some very good winds, it can be a bit cold in the winter though but with a good fitting wetsuit not too bad. You should have a go again Ducbird, you will eventually get the hang of it, its all part of the fun.
Skydiving Did 400 jumps over 5 yrs in lots of places around the world, this from the UK on a sunny Easter weekend:
Outliar - your post resonates with me - riding a bike forces you to focus on the here and now......with serious consequences if you don't! I think this is why it is so good at clearing your head and providing meditation. I suspect it must be similar to other activities that require lots of concentration. I also sail and cycle - both great for "head emptying". I think flying/gliding is another sport which connects with motorcyclists, although I can't afford to do either!
Used to be bikes but in recent years (like Loz) it's not been like it was. So nothing. My mind is always full, I rarely have a good nights sleep and am constantly thinking.
Constantly thinking rationally about real stuff is good. Constantly thinking about delusions and obsessions not so much. So which is it? And can you tell the difference?
Have you read the chimp paradox? Not as easy as it sounds! (Although I agree hobbies like the above *help you).
along with riding motorbikes and the necessity to stay upright and alive (same for cycling), I find participation in sport is great at shutting the world out. just you vs "x", or you and your team-mates vs "x+x...x". I personally prefer team sports, especially rugby, but as I get older I need to find more gentle past times (not to mention that my GF goes nuts every time I mention getting a run out with one of the local veteran's teams, it seems almost a year isn't long enough for her to forget my broken arm while playing last January). Never really had the time to get into martial arts, but can imagine it to help massively with focus and similar.
You thinking how to spend that first months invoicing -£1000 per day = a nice track day machine......
boxing, took it up at the start of the year at the age of 47.had 2 fights this year (2 wins),and nothing focuses the mind than someone trying to take your head off.wish i had took it up 35 years ago
Before bikes for me it was ice skating..... Looking back I think I would have been a good speed skater.... We used to go to other rinks to challenge the fastest they had and won more often than not. The ice rink in Bristol got knocked down a few years back but they other day I took my kids skating at the local temp ice rink down in town.... Like riding a bike.... Never forget... I lost count of the amount of people staring at me, including the stewards... Like biking for me the most fun is the lean angle and how far over you can go on a freshly ground set of blades although not the other day as It was the size of a puddle...top fun all the same...
