93 900ss cam pulleys

  1. Hi there,

Would anyone know what material the CAM pulleys on a 93 900 SS are made out off?

    Cheers

  2. Would be steel :)

  3. Fantastic cheers. The pulleys I have are quite badly rusted (due to lying in a damp environment for a long period of time before I bought it) and I'm planning a bit of electrolysis to set things right! Ta.

  4. Yo, the ones on my Elefant are quite rusty, but my solution is to dremel the thick stuff off, and then run a set of belts for a few hundred miles by which time they will be all nice and shiney. I will then fit a new set of belts, but mine are only ( only ! ) £13 each. This ( IMHO) has got to be cheaper and a whole lot easier than taking the pulleys off !!

  5. Sound's like it could be an option. The only issue I would have is that due to the current state of my pulleys, I would be very uncomfortable and worried about riding the bike (or even running the engine) as they are so bad I would expect that the level of corrosion/debris/sharp edges would easily make mince meat of the belts resulting in very bad times! The bike is still in bits with the engine out so I think I might as well go for it. The only cost I can see is the price of the cam pulley tool, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than any cost incurred due to belts snapping. Where do you get belts for £13? Are they exact fit OE??

The picture below shows what I'm dealing with, it's not pretty!

  6. OMG
where has that been standing - bottom of a pond!

  7. Haha! It's been sitting in a power station in the North of Scotland.

  8. OMFGG! Snow in November??

Do NOT run that without new bearings, belts and a bloody good clean! The twin bearings on the tensioner's are available on eBay etc, should be a ref.number on them, they are the same bearing as the clutch release plate so buy five, two per tensioner, one for you clutch, I'm assuming its in the same state!

The two guide bearings are only availiable from Ducati methinks?

  9. I think/know that I would be doing a 100% strip down on that motor.

  10. Amen to that. God knows what the barrels look like.

  11. Never seen one as bad as that! Best of luck!

When it comes to de rusting things, I find that Bilt Hamber Deox products are the business. I'm with the other guys on this, it probably needs a proper strip down. If its like that, then who knows what is lurking beneath? Maybe the valves are going to be stuck, rings rusted etc.

With the motor out, Its not much more work to get the heads off, and stripped down... Then take it from there.

Then maybe make friends with someone who can vapour or soda blast all the rubbish off the cases.

  12. Oh My Good Lord, makes my Hef-lump look absolutley pristine !!! You are going to have to invest in gallons of plus gas and a impact driver - do not attempt to move those hex screws with an ordinary key _ and good luck - I hope it was cheap!

  13. Rust. What do I win?

  14. Thanks for the advice all. The photo makes it look worse than in reality, but it is very bad. Yeah, definitely replacing belts + bearings and depending on how they turn out, the pulleys also. From initial inspections, the rest of the engine isn't in bad nick, turns over, and the clutch itself seems fine. Some type of substance has got into the pulleys area. It may be a surprise to know that this bike was last MOT'd early this year!! Hopefully the end result will be that much more satisfying when looking back on this pic. Cheers.

  15. You don't need a running engine to MOT the bike!

  16. Well to rephrase - the bike was running earlier this year.

  17. The PO must have ridden it through seawater to get it in such a state 11 months max !! Good luck and keep us posted. Apparently the non-adjustable guide rollers are almost inpossible to get out ( copyright Chris) so try and free them off before thinking about removal

  18. The Post Office? Didn't realise it was a Royal Mail bike

  19. Yeah they've been getting regular penetrating spray treatment whilst the other jobs have been getting done. The engine stage of the build is now starting.

  20. Keep us posted on the progress of the rebuild and plenty of pictures, and keep withit the 900 moter is real hoot to ride around on.
