Yesterday's Daily Politics had a very interesting interview by Andrew Neil on Brexit and the British economic outlook with Danny Blanchflower and Liam Halligan with Louise Cooper as guest commentator. Non of them are politicians and although there was some minor disagreement it was surprising to what extent they did agree. Well worth watching on the iPlayer, it starts at 14:50 BBC iPlayer - Daily Politics - 26/01/2017
shamelessly lifted,(unedited or defaced by yours truly),from another site,(link in red at the bottom): FORGETTING THE LESSONS OF THE PAST Oh dear. They never learn, do they? Those Eurocrats over in Brussels think that they have hit on a clever new ploy to victimise Britain and punish us for having had the temerity to vote to Leave. After years of telling us that life outside the EU would be awful for Britain, they have now been forced by reality to admit that, actually, it is going to be pretty good. All those free trade deals that Liam Fox is busily chasing are going to be good for British business. So now the EU has decided that when the rules of the EU say that a member state cannot agree to any trade deals due to the restrictive nature of the Customs Union, what it really means is that we cannot even talk about a free trade deal until after we have left. What they hope to do is build in a time lag of a year or more between the UK leaving the Customs Union and any new trade deals coming into operation. That will hit the pesky Brits in the pocket and allow the Eurocrats to crow over our misfortune. And they intend to follow that up by dragging their heels over a UK-EU trade deal. They will throw obstacles into the path of British trade to the EU. More punishment for the UK. But they forget that this has been tried before. And it did not end well for the European Empire that tried it. Back in 1806 the Emperor of the French, Napoleon Bonaparte, ruled most of Europe. France itself extended deep into what are now Italy and Germany, while his family and acolytes sat on thrones in Italy, Germany, Poland and Scandinavia. Only Britain stood defiant. After the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 Napoleon had no chance of an armed invasion of Britain. He was stymied. Then he had an idea. He called it “The Continental System”. Under this masterful plan all contact between Britain and the European Continent would be cut off. Not even the mail would be allowed through. All trade would grind to a halt. Britain would be economically prostrate. She would be bankrupt in a matter of months and forced to surrender. Napoleon issued his orders. The ports were closed to British ships, no ships could sail for Britain. Every country in Europe was bullied into joining the Continental System. All except one: Portugal. Portugal is Britain’s oldest ally and had important trade links to Britain. So in 1808 Napoleon invaded Portugal. To do so he had to march through Spain, and so invaded Spain as well. The Portuguese asked for British help. The British sent an army under Wellington and so began the Peninsular War that would drain France of men and money. Meanwhile, the Russian economy was tottering toward collapse without British trade and British investments. The Tsar of Russia lifted the embargo and began trading with Britain again. So in 1812 Napoleon invaded Russia, a campaign that destroyed his own army. With the threat of Napoleon’s army gone, more and more countries opened up to trade with Britain. They had been suffering economically and unemployment was rising. In any case the French economy itself was crumbling. The tax take was nose-diving and Napoleon’s government was facing bankruptcy. Napoleon could no longer keep a large army in the field. He was defeated and exiled to Elba. His attempt to return to power was crushed at Waterloo. He ended his days a prisoner of the British on the remote island of St Helena As for Britain, how had she fared while Europe suffered massive economic dislocation and bankruptcy? Well, British trade with Europe fell by 55% between 1806 and 1808, and did not recover for years. However, the British had the open sea to take advantage of, and they did. British ships had to take British goods further, but they found eager customers. Britain ended up more prosperous after the Continental System than before. If only the Eurocrats bothered to read their history they could save themselves a lot of trouble. Dr Fox told his audience of politicians and business leaders in Canada that he is confident of getting a free trade deal with the EU. He also promised that the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) signed between the EU and Canada can be improved on with the UK once it leaves the EU. CETA gives Canada 98 per cent tariff free trade with the single market but it does not have free movement of people and does not pay any money to the European Commission. Interesting if we can get an improved deal like this. Steve
We rather ashamedly dumped most of the commonwealth countries as it was a pre requisite to us joining the EU. Now, if we are clever and the commonwealth countries can forgive us, then we would be as a collective, a mighty negotiation group of nations. The EU isn't the only group that can form an association.
Absolutely! British Standards (BSxxx) are still used and recognised in a number of countries. India is the really important opportunity for us.
Inida you say? The Country that wants freer movement of its citizens before agreeing any trade deal with the UK? here is an interesting stat for you. The average income of a person in India is: Economy of India | WikiWand Poverty rates in India’s poorest states are three to four times higher than those in the more advanced states. While India’s average annual per capita income was $1,410 in 2011 – placing it among the poorest of the world’s middle-income countries – it was just $436 in Uttar Pradesh (which has more people than Brazil) and only $294 in Bihar, one of India’s poorest states.
Here is a stat for you, given you claim to be in business, India was starting off the negotiations by lodging a wish list at the outset. Duke please don't ever play poker.
I wouldn't argue that with a population of about 1.3 billion, the majority are desperately poor. However there are also many very wealthy Indians with a massive buying power and they want branded imported goods much like the upper class in China. Seems like a golden opportunity for a desperate country like little england to exploit when they have cut their ambilicol trading cord to EU
Little england? The U.K. chap and you're in it, you're coming with us and hey, the biggest producer of bagpipes is next door to them so you can pop in for some extras.
How can someone be so ill informed? You say cut the UMBILICAL cord as if, once we leave all trade will cease. Trade will go on pretty much as it is now and we'll have the added bonus of newly forged trade deals. Are you saying trade with the EU will cease?
Umbilical cord also implies dependency and economic nutrition that is only incoming. That is simply and transparently untrue. We have a huge trade deficit with the EU. We buy far more from them than we sell to them. We sell more to the real world beyond the EU than we do to the sclerotic and stifled Eurozone. Only 5% of UK businesses actually trade with EU member states. We don't suckle from the teat of the fat, dead Euro sow. In terms of hard figures, they suckle form us - just as Scotchland does - and from UK tax-payers who are the second largest contributors to the central EU waste fund. Without our revenues (of which little angry impotent Scotchland contributes only 10% - England does the heavy lifting) they're fucked, a condition which future political historians will consider satisfactory.
wow, a bit bitter there gimp, even by your standards.i can only assume you sill aint got much on workwise the now hence yer angry and blaming everybody else? i would be interested in seeing your sources, (i regularly post mine). everything i read and watch (including uk treasury ministers at holyrood comity) suggest something completely different. i assume you are aware a lot of UK exports are made up of Scottish products sitting in english where houses and leaving from english ports yet are categorized UK export?. i also assume you are aware that england sells more to Scotland than we sell to england to the tune of approx 10bill a year (government calculation so i wouldn't be overly surprised if its well balanced in englands favor) just because only two of us are foolish enough to bite, if its a representative spread on here at 1 in 2 up here will know yer full of shit and chuckling in to there porridge right now. so i guess should independence ever become reality you will do as your told and continue to trade to ease you balance of trade. for those that dont, take a wee look at the balance of trade figures. get the news they wont report. pretty much since day one and almost ever year since 1707 we have been paying considerably more in than we get back. on average over the last 40 years it roughly 50bill in 30odd bill back, the Scottish deficit comes from allocated debt repayments (our share of the 1.6trill debt) trident, foreign policy and wars. running westminster including the unelected HOL. all the things we have continually rejected at the ballot box. why the anger gimp?. we dont hate the english, despite yer bitter kipper attitude doing its best to sow division we dislike westminster mismanagement of the uk resources, hence we are where we are right now. post your sources gimp. its becoming increasingly obvious to me many of you have realized you have cocked up. i admire the brave faces and misplaced optimism.. but i despise your misplaced anger. but keep at it. your in a minority when it comes to your attitude gimp. i know it, but your words are far reaching. thank you, your doing our work for us. but for the sake of your health, get some help.
finm, I believe that WSCC* imports more from the UK than it exports to it and I am concerned that in addition to being seen as treacherous, ungrateful wretches, WSCC's bid for independence will leave it virtually penniless and unable to pay for the weekly rubbish collection to which it is accustomed. Can you advise? I think that WSCC should try to woe The Sturgeonator away from her current county council to assist with the WSCC independence issue. My hope that the redtop continues to make such a hash of things that the question of WSCC independence will never again arise and that WSCC will remain comfortably ensconced in the bosom (or arse-end, whatever) of this, our United Kingdom. Your help, once translated, will be gratefully accepted. Thank you! *West Sussex County Council
Hook line and sinker there Fin. Can't you see I'm feeding the troll? What's good for the goose is good for the gander mate.
