According to what I have just googled, it isn't compulsory in France except for under 14's. Some ski schools insist on it, some areas on the mountains may, such as snow parks. What was interesting was some ski insurance packages do insist on it.

interesting, the last time i skied it must have been 50/50 at best. Whats been the big driver, usually this sort of change would have to be forced through by legislation/rules- seems curiously voluntary.
