Hi All, Google isn't my friend today so I thought I'd ask a quick question ... it's 2.5 weeks till my first track day and my first run out on the 848. Woooo! The only issue I have is that it's still road shift and I need to swap it to race shift - can this be done easily? Anyone done it? Bradders? I don't actually see the bike again til the track day so I'll have to swap it over first thing that morning If not, there's some cheap levers out there that come directly off the gearbox spline so I could just buy one of those. I'm just thinking ahead and trying to be prepared! I get to rag the 848 soon! Yip yah! I hope my ankle is up to it, I had surgery three weeks ago..
Flip the linkage upsidevdown or £25 on a direct off the shaft jobbie. Only caution is deoending on race rearset, it can add some width so a direct lever can bi off centre from where you need it, ie you have to tuck your foot in to snick a gear
Ahh, ta. I wasn't sure if they could just flip over or not. I know a few couldn't. These are reasonably cheap though Rizoma Lever
Im assuming TP, that you're not in the UK as doing your first trackday in December would be a really brave move But yep, its pretty simple to change to a race pattern as Bradders as pointed out
Don't mean to hijack....Is it easy enough to get yr head a round the change? What's the riding advantages? I keep eyeing up some nice rear sets that are race shift... Cheers.
No advantage whatsoever on the road, if you are of a certain age it may be difficult to adapt. As a lot of road yards have passed before you have thought about which way to shift, instead of instinctively shifting. JMHO
The only benefit with the race set up is you can pop down the gears when the bike is leant over, which is better for hard accelerating out of corners when you havent got the space to get your foot hooked under the pedal. On the road, as Ghost rightly states, no benefit whatsoever
i race in the scottish championships and also have a ducati road bike...ur right ...its a lot to get used to so ive just left my race bike as is ...road shift
I've got race shift on my Ducatis and road on the 'berg and the ktm. You do kind of get used to it, but I've changed the wrong way on a fast corner and it can be a little unsettling. It does prove (or otherwise) your reactions....
I've run both road and race on different bikes at the same time, you soon adapt sure you'll make the odd mistake early on but it's a quick learning process. Race shift if you use a lever off the spine is also more direct IMO, no linkages to cause mis-shifts
I swapped my road bike over a few months ago Tony (1098), I'd been using race shift on the race bike and just decided it'd be easier if they were both the same. I had Gilles rearsets and I went for a direct gear lever (Ducati performance) for a nice responsive feel.
Out of curiosity, is there a reason why race pattern isn't standard on all bikes? I don't see the disadvantage of it at all.
Its not just the banked over bit which helps, it is more positive, makes downshifts easier and upshitfs really easy especially clutchless and I find like said above just makes sense. Does take some getting used to, and if my road bike had std and I couldnt change it (eg Multi) i'd consider going back to road so its the same all the time. This is a direct shaft tho, altho I have flipped it over before I got a lever and it was fine
Interestingly I have a Hyper with change on left and a Norton with change on right, switching between the two has never been a problem.
