Hi guys iv got a ducati 996 engine and I wish to fit a dynojet quickshifter to it! Question is will it damage my gearbox? As your up shifting without using the clutch anyone help?
you've hit on a controversial one there Crazy! Most of us upshift without clutch anyway so minimal advantage there apart from not having to worry about getting timing spot on. Great for track use I suppose but also a greater chance of general gearbox wear in the long run (MOO)
Can I ask why you up shift without clutch? Isn't it bad for the bike? (I'm sorry new to things like this) I'm trying to get things worked out before I decide to buy the other parts I'm looking at
because the engagement of each gear is by 'dogs' (3 or 6 over the years) it's a simple and pretty sturdy system and so quite hard to damage allthough some might say crude as well certainly compared to baulk rings and synchromesh on most cars as there is no pre-selection device to try and ease engagement. When you pull the clutch in the engagement of the dogs into the corresponding slots of it's counterpart (for the gear chosen) have a chance to match each other's speeds in theory but this isn't always the case sometimes due to the slightest of clutch drag or the momentum of free-wheeling gears 'having a mind of their own' etc - even bearing friction, worn or new can play a part here. Pulling in the clutch doesn't guarantee a seamless change and timing a clutchless upshift to perfection (i.e. matching the dog engagement speed exactly) can be an improvement even. if you read up on the various pages via the Internet it will hopefully give you the confidence to try it. It's most satisfying when you get it right, more easily achieved when you are 'getting a move on' all the way up the box. You do it without even thinking about it after a while. Also you will know from the lack of judder/ shudder or sound from the engine/gearbox that you have got it right.
Chris explains it well. Get used to clutchless upshifts (roll the power of slighty as you snick the next gear) and see if you like/appreciate that before jumping on the quickshifter bandwagon. Not really usefull on the road, but do save a few ms over a lap. Haveing a race gear shift pattern is also beneficial to clutchless changes (1 up 5 down)
the big advantage of the quickshifter is that it cuts your ignition for a fraction of a second to change gear..that mean you dont need to roll of and can keep it pinned forever going up the box ....but only useful on the race track id say...
