1200 Dilemma! Spend To Maintain My 2013 Multi Or Change

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by spanish, Feb 7, 2017.

  1. My 2013 Multi has 13500 miles on the clock and shares a garage with a Monster 1200. Planning this month to have the smaller service, MOT, new PR4's and new chain and sprocket (42 t rear sprocket) and expecting not a lot of change from 1k! Yesterday 'fuel sensor error' so need to allow another 100 to replace that! And next year the big service.
Thought of changing like for like but huge hit for a new Multi. Looked and thought about other tourers, Aprilla Caponade, Kawasaki etc but still love the rawness of the Multis twin. Probably just have to accept the cost of maintenance. Sure others have been there and wondered what decisions were taken.

  2. I did start to wonder the same thing when I had mine. My mileage was such that I was looking at a big service every 14-15 months. Just not doable!

The decision was taken out of my hands but, for you being out of warranty it might be worth learning to do the big service yourself. It was something I was considering as I did love the multi and would have kept it long-term had the bike not had other ideas.

  3. Isn't it a little early for chain/sprocket change? That's about 250 euros.

  4. I did mine myself at about 25k miles. Really not that hard a job if you just buy the chain tool.

  5. Depends how much you like the bike. I've already made the decision to rebuild in the event of catastrophic failure because there is nothing out there that is better remembering mine has Ohlins semi active electronic suspension, decat and a remap (insurer informed) and it is set up for sports riding. 6. Totally agree with Andy. This is the right answer. If you can afford the new Mutli (DVT, S version) then I suggest it without any doubt.

  7. Keep it! Find a good independent specialist to do the service, buy and fit the c&s, and never, but never, buy your tyres from a dealer!!!!! You have probably just halved your anticipated outlay!

  12. 2010 Multi with 26k miles used as Summer toy for Euro tours. Tried GT Skyhook a couple of years ago for 2k miles and loved getting back on mine (after heads replaced). Also tried DVT but found it had lost too much edge for me. Mine still gives me a thrill every time I take it out so can't justify changing and it's still immaculate and runs better than ever. So I went and bought another complete contrast bike instead and very happy that I did.

  13. I went to trade mine in last year a 2011 with 40k on and basically two different dealers weren't interested one said just ebay it. So i thought whats the point in paying for a new bike thats worthless in 4 years. So decided to just keep it as a toy and lavish it with goodies. So now i have a bike i know inside and out with top quality suspension , great engine tune , great brakes its has lots of memories and owes me nothing and best of all no depreciation . Wouldnt suggest anybody doesn't buy new , who doesn't like new things but it worked for me. cheers chris

  14. 2010, Sport, Decat and Qd.s, CJS remap, ohlins Suspension ECU, carbon bling, 15500 miles. Just had big service done. And love it. I wanted to change, but rode the DVT and was a little disappointed. Im not saying the DVT is a bad bike, infact its a bloody brilliant bike. But like Kirky says...Its not got the rawness and rush of the old one, that makes me smile mile after mile!

  15. My decision is plan to keep. Agree with Paul and some others that the 2013 Multi has loads of character and the DVT model, to me personally, is a little dull. Also huge investment to trade up. That is one of the reasons why I have considered other bikes. Recently had a 300 mile ride on a Kawasaki 1000sx and, though a very different bike, it was a joy. But aren't all bikes!

  16. yer keep it, 1k in installments is only a couple of months.

  17. My 2012 Touring single spark has done 23000 miles now and although I'm tempted by a new bike I'm loath to get rid of my beloved Multi. I've got it just right. Decat, ECU reprogrammed, Mechatronic Ohlins suspension unit and a whole host of other minor mods that add up to it being the perfect bike. So rather than trade it in and get a pittance I'm thinking of keeping it and doing my own servicing/repairs.
Anyone already tackled a major belt service at home? Special tools needed? Any other advice appreciated

  18. Interesting comments, my Multi will be 5 years old this spring, has had a few of the usual minor problems, all have been fixed, and has probably flattened out on the depreciation curve, so there is really little incentive to replace it.

It is still a fabulous bike :)

Mine is one of the first (May 2010) and, with only 16k miles, I'm going through the same decision. I haven't ridden a 2017 yet, but find my 10 to be far more enjoyable than anything since - on power delivery and suspension particularly. That said, the finish is bloody dreadful, but I reckon that a few £'00 thrown at it will sort things out. With that done, I'd see no reason to change.

  20. I have a 2014 S GT with 27k on the clock. it's now out of warranty, I've just done a service on it and changed the chain and sprockets. the only problem I have is wiping the service reminder that keep popping up. I did buy one of those Bluetooth gadgets and a link cable but I can get my hands on the software to use it, hell I even bough an android phone as some one told me you can only get the app on android not iphone. I still love my bike and we have been all over Europe and the UK on it, I have no intensions of ever changing it, and I've resigned my self to buying a second hand engine if mine ever goes pop. I will be doing the major service my self to but will have to look into how to check and alter the valve clearance.
