naa did it on monday online no probs , i have forgotten before and got away with it , even got a second reminder letter form the DVLA telling me i forgot to sorn one of my bikes and that was a month later
The thing i don't understand is a policeman can tell if you have MOT insurance and tax just buy checking your reg , so why do we need tax discs , buy law my bike has tax as i paid for it on monday , but im not legal untill i stick it on the bike , with insurance you are covered as soon as you set it up even before you receive your cover note , so why do we need a bit of paper stuck to your bike :frown:
Maybe there's a few days leeway? When I forgot mine they said nothing until I renewed and then the 'bottom inspectors' set on me even though I back paid to the start of the month that it was due and hadn't ridden the bike, so technically only a 'compliance' offence. I think it was about 3 weeks late though? A pox on the house of DVLA...
It could be because the traffic police are not the only ones who need to check... Traffic wardens, PCSO's, British Transport Police, MoD Police etc. may all need to do a quick check to see if a vehicle is legal and they don't all have instant access to the DVLA databse.
The problem with riding a bike that's not taxed ( or not insured, or not MoTed ) is that you can still get caught on an ANPR camera and you don't even know about it until the Notice of Prosecution drops through the letter box up to 28 days later... Given the increasing number of ANPR being used in the South west, I wouldn't risk it...
Technically you can as I already said the woman at DVLA told me on the phone you have 5 days grace so that you can ride on the roads until the disc arrives through the post! As soon as you have paid for the road tax its on their database so why would the ANPR think you are not when its the DVLA database they use?
The whole road tax disc thing is rubbish . Open to abuse as loads dont bother with it. Why not add a bit to the fuel prices and then the more fuel you use the more tax you pay? You cant avoid it this way either. You could go further and add an element of 3rd party insurance and then no more uninsured drivers/riders apart from thieves of course. I cant imagine anyone complaining at this extra on the fuel because of the tax disc saving. Well, maybe the electric car drivers but that`ll teach them to be so smug!
Agree on principle and some countries do this but can you imagine the price of fuel if our Government adopted this system, because you can be absolutely sure that they would pile as much as possible onto it and not make it at all reasonable. I don't fancy paying £5+ per litre...

Devon and Cornwall Police no longer issue fixed penalty notices for the offence 'VE10 failing to display a Vehicle Excise Licence'. Instead they report to the DVLA LVRO (local vehicle registration office) via a form called a CLE2/8. They only do that after 5 days of the expiry date of the displayed disc. If the vehicle is 'taxed' online the Police National Computer should be updated to reflect this. Pete
Find another Post Office! All I produced at my local P.O. was the log book and my debit card to pay, all they did was scan the bar code and issue me a new disc!
I would if it wasn't so far away from me (over 10 miles thanks to the government closing down many if them around here). Its not like I live in a small town either but saying that I have only bought tax online the last year or so, so maybe they have updated and got the relevant equipment in now.
To add to the 'Rob-dog' theme I've just received a renewal for the 916 tax: £74 for road tax on a bike, combine that with £20+ to fill up, then we are indeed being robbed! My Dad only pays £30 tax on his car which has a larger engine (granted it probably uses less fuel) takes up more road space and causes more wear to the roads. I'd rather ride the 916 though... :wink:
Thievin' Bastids... So got the reminder for £74, go online to do it (before I forget and get an £80 fine on top) and in the hour between receiving the reminder and paying for it it's gone up to £76 - the dirty, evil, robbin' bastids...
No matter what the woman from the DVLA told you - failing to display a tax disc IS an offence, and you CAN be prosecuted for it. As I said, the chances of it actually happening are quite small, but the fact remains it is illegal to use a vehicle on a public road without displaying a tax disc ( with certain specific exceptions - before the pedants jump in - such as traveling to and from a pre-arranged MoT test )
We already have just about the most heavily taxed fuel in the world ! How much more do you want to pay for your petrol ?
Then the woman at the DVLA I spoke to is lying then is she? Maybe I should phone them and tell them so since you obviously know better than her
I dont want to pay any more,I`m just pointing out that instead of paying whatever the tax is in advance, regardless of usage, it makes more sense to scrap that and pay a little more on every gallon as you go. The more you use the more you pay and it prevents people who dont get a disc avoiding payment too.I`m not commenting on the other taxes.
