If it is as described it is full marks to your mechanic for the diagnosis. It sounds like a collet wasn't seated correctly but as it is all under warranty, no foul no favour and credit to you for extending, HOWEVER after 14000 miles it shouldnt be happening. Im not sure if the collets have to be removed on the testastretta for a shim service, if so it sounds like it wasnt put back properly. I had an engine blow up on my 1991 900ss but that was down to the ringland on the Arias piston fracturing and ally bits being evenly distributed throughout the vertical pot oil and crap everywhere. The valvegear survived intact Still got an untraceable oil leak though!
well, it's only done just under 12,000 miles....the shim service is at 15,000 isn't it? Anyway..... As long as it gets fixed and is fine. It's just a pain, as I have no bike..... And I don't own a car. Looks like I'm on the bus for a bit!
Like has already been said ....whats caused it is what matters ..... valve train opening/closing failure collets come adrift miss adjusted shims caused valve to burn out and fall into cylinder .....would of thought it would of been running on one cyl for a while before total failure valve seats dropped out of head jammed valve open then piston to valve contact do they have friction welded valve heads onto valve stem ...... same as the gs 1200 panzas ....different expansion rates causes fatigue in valves and head drops off just a few mechcanical thoughts
no no, you are right....the pressing of the starter button and the clicking is just like a rectifier fault...I had the same on my Firestorm. This wasn't like that though.... That was only afterwards.... I've also had a dropped valve (on the Firestorm as well), and yes, it rattled like a bag of bones a d stopped fairly quickly. Remember though, I was travelling only a little bit, and mostly on momentum. It did also get very noisy, but remember that I'm running QDs with the baffles out....they are loud, so probably masked some of the noise. I haven't seen the broken valve, but it does seem plausible to me....remember I'm on the bus now...Colchester is a fair distance from North London... ;-)
It's quite possible, and again, sounds plausible. it did feel a little like it was on one cylinder, and I said that to the Tech... I'm not technical enough to know though, and sadly I haven't seen it, so can't comment/don't have pictures....I can always ask though. If the shims were mis adjusted, they were like that from the factory....now that is worrying!
Maybe from the frying pan into the fire. My Tuono had an engine failure when the front cylinder big end bearing let go two years ago. It tool Aprilia 4 MONTHS, not 4 weeks, to fix it under warranty!
I agree, I'm far from being knowledgeable in this area, what I do know is that all engines have the potential for this sort of mechanical f**k up....... If one manufacturer suffered this more than others regularly then clearly people would move away. I think David has been unlucky, however its sounds to me as though Ducati have been very helpful and it will be sorted, what more can you ask? Good luck, I'm glad its all covered. I suppose we could all go and sell our Multi's and buy Hondas but that would be a little boring......
Dave - sorry to here about your issues. You are being very cool about it - but as Ducati are picking up the bill, then no harm done. Hope you have more (good) luck with the next set up..
Yeah....if it was my wallet paying, I'd be getting an engine from a breaker, which is exactly what I did with my Firestorm....but....Ducati are paying, so I'll take all the bits and labour required to bring it back to the standard it should be...which to be fair to the Dealer/Tech/Ducati is what they are doing. The order for the bits was sent to Ducati yesterday as a "priority" so if we are lucky with delivery/availability I "should" have my bike back this side of Christmas. If not, I shall be speaking to Mr Cox about a replacement bike to run about on, etc. etc. etc. .... It is a pain, I'm not happy about it, it shouldn't happen, but it has. That's a fact. Is it a Ducati thing? No... Was it unlucky? Maybe. I will ask why they think it may have happened. The key thing to focus on is getting it fixed properly ASAP... and at no cost to me. If Ducati and the Dealer do that, happy days. If not? Well.... I'll keep you all posted.
Well I have had my MTS1200T only since 1st Sept 2012, but it's been back to OYB (Ducati Aylesbury) 3 times already and I always sit in reception and wait so I see all the other customers coming in to service reception. Now OYB sell many makes including Kawasaki, Yamaha, Aprillia but I was struck by the fact that the vast majority were Ducati riders bringing their konked out bikes in, and Ducati riders collecting after major rebuilds (fact). Made me think, f**k
Ok I've read everything on this thread, but can’t see the bit where your saying you were red lining it for 5 mins just before you lost power? at least if you were it would give us all some closure and we'd be able to get our heads round how this valve failure happened. Or were you just bimmbling along and next minuet you lost power? if that’s the case god help you all your all doomed...muhahahaha... And I'll be getting a Tiger or a GS rofl
Blimey....took you a while to spot that........ I always kept away from Ducati.....in fact we used to call them....wait for it....DUCRAPPY........ Whan I got my SS I wasn't looking for a Ducati, but it seemed a good idea at the time....... However, I have now had it for three years and although I like riding it, I think it is the most 'fragile' bike I have ever rode/rid/ridden/drove and I am constantly thinking 'WTF did they do it that way for?'.......... I don't imagine for one minute it has changed much with the later models and I liken Ducati to Ferrari.........always in the bl**dy garage. AL
