848 Timing Belts, If Anyone Knows About Them

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by slinky848, Feb 14, 2017.

  1. Hi.

    Your current questions should be:

WHEN were the belts done at 3500 miles and WHERE were they done.

What you'll probably find is that, assuming they were fitted by a dealer/ reputable independent using Ducati belts with 2 year warranty less than 12 months ago, you will reach the valve check interval at 7500 miles before you reach 2 years on the belts assuming you do average mileage (4000) this season.

This will cost +/- the cost of the belts depending whether you have them changed or not..... and unless you're doing all this yourself you might as well get them changed at this point WHICH unless you intend to ride over winter I'd get done late March 2018 so your new belts sit through one less winter.

  3. THANK YOU [emoji5]

so theres a valve check @ 7500 miles. in which while the work is being done possibly get the belt done too.

now i presume this valve check is a must do? or have my summer ride and when next summer is on its way get everything done?

i guess ill be putting about 3-5k miles on this bike this summer, bike currently has 5580

  4. Some people don't want the best, what can you do :Angelic::rolleyes:

:Writing: but he was happy with Peugeot belts a little while ago...

  5. ^ at that mileage front tyre could be original?

  6. Depends when belt
All depends on the who and when with the previous servicing I reckon. I got mine from Ducati Glasgow with new belts and fluids, only 500 odd miles on it but 7 year old tyres. I got new tyres immediately then valves and belts one year later at 7500 miles. At this point I know for sure where I'm up to with everything, pretty sure I'm keeping it long term so turn to the collective 'knowledge' of the web....

I plan to run it to around 22000 before I have valves again at which point belts will be 3 years old thereabouts. This just skIps one valve service. oil service regularly but that's easily done yourself.

  10. ive only ever been to the 'dick turpin' other than that no big bike meets. so cholchesters the closest place . cheers for that

  11. Do you know what, Yes i am fucking happy with it.

the dealers mechanic that told me this told me about other bikes,

THEY DID NOT FIT THE TIMING BELT ON THIS BIKE I OWN

i absolutly fine thinking the belt is used elsewhere, means its a good belt.
im a smart, logical mechanical thinking guy and im absolutly fine.

and i smile to your arrigance for you to think everything on your wonderful bike is made by/for/in some place you wish it wasnt

    'smiley face' 'mini-fuck you fave'

  12. Maybe it's just to early, or perhaps it's the Billericay dialect, but I just can't make any sense of that.

  14. now that is banter from you both, that i can also enjoy, but comments before hand, wind people up, and are insulting, theres a fine line between the two types,

one day maybe it will be common knowledge.

and note for future, insults/banter aimed at billericay has no effect, i dislike it here, and the people.

grew up near but not in billericay.

  18. @slinky848 Dont take this as a criticism.

Thing is you can either listen to the advice of people who have owned Ducatis for years, had them serviced at good and bad places so learned from experience, serviced them their selves, put a lot of money into them one way and another or you can ignore their advice crack on with something you've over heard and possibly knacker your new pride and joy. You're choice, but in my opinion you're daft to ignore them.

These aren't Jap crap that you just throw a spanner at now and again and they'll run forever, If that's what you're after then get one because I can guarantee you Ducs ain't that.

The peeps on here have saved me thousands with their advice over the 10 years ive had my 749 so cant complain at all and know the real value of their experience, and you have some of the most respected and helpful members commenting on your thread, but it's up to you if you wanna pay through the nose for something.

Again not a criticism just an opinion :)

  19. i appreciate all replys, i really do, i like the fact this forum is here.

but i think you also missed my point.

my ducati will get the best treatment. and i would never fit anything onto it that didnt have a genuine ducati sticker on.

if i get a belt done it will be a ducati belt, done at a ducati dealer. im not risking £10k to save a couple of quid.

my one and only statement is. ive been told the belt from a car fits on an 848.

    not can i do this.

my question has always been 'any info on how reliable 848 timing belts are, and why my bike had one at 3500 miles as this seemed super early.
