900ss Fork Internals Into 900 Monster Forks?

  1. Hello. I was wondering what I could to with my 900SS (1995) Showa forks, the outside, up near the yokes, has corroded and some of the metal is coming away in strips. Carby SS forks are difficult to get so I was wondering if anyone knows if I could use Monster forks, which might be easier to get hold of and fit the adjustable SS bits inside? Thanks.

  2. It would be cheaper IMO to have the outer gold shrouds cleaned up and re-finished, although paint / powder coating will probably be the solution rather than re-anodising, given what you say about the 'damage'.

Alternatively, the Marzocchi non-adjustables from the carbed SSs turn up quite cheaply at times. I let a pair of good rebuilt ones go with all my spares when I sold the SS. You could try a PM to the buyer - sniffipn.

I doubt you will be successful in getting the SS Showa guts to work in Monster forks, but I might be wrong having never studied the Monster ones.

  3. Cant see why they won't, except that some SS forks are longer than monster ones. Don't know if thats the internals or just outers.

Or, another thought worth considering, converting the internals to 916 type ones, few desodue guys did that pretty well, as the internals are better quality and suspension better :upyeah:

  5. I doubt the as internals would work in non-adjustable forks - the forks wouldn't have the correct bottoms, with the requisite damping adjusters

  6. You have to change quite a lot.

  7. All carby SS and monster legs are same length and 50mm dia at top yoke up to about 97 when calipers changed from 40 to 65 and axle dia got bigger.

  8. It may be the later SS that are longer but they are, by quite a bit.

  9. ie SS are about 30mm longer for clipons above yoke. They have big axle and 65mm calipers.

  10. I was thinking I could just change the fork uppers and use my SS internals, stanchions and lower legs.
I'll measure the uppers and try and get some non adjustable showas that have the same length.
Unless anyone has any Carby adjustable forks for sale?
    Or non adjustable ones?
I'll measure mine when I get home later.
    Thanks for your help everyone
