950 And 1200dvt Standard Advise

  1. Having owned both the old and newer Multi's (both in the S variation), I'd agree that the LED headlights on the newer model is a big improvement, however the old bike wasn't THAT bad.
I grew up riding bikes with terrible headlights, (Honda CB550, 750, GPz1100) even more recent bikes like my R6 was not a lot better. The Tuono was a big improvement and the first multistrada was another step forward, best lights I'd ever had (until the DVT).

One issue is that all car and bike lights are moving over to LED, which are much brighter than Tungsten bulbs, but you are still expected to pay a premium for them. All bikes and cars are built to a price and it's the individuals choice to say if they want to pay this.

Personally Desmo 09, I'd recommend fitting the Auxillary Ducati LED lights for an integrated, simple and effective solution (albeit more expensive than buying some other types)

I looked into these at one time before I bought the Ducati ones:

  2. Already mounted, because one of the issue is the management of the bulbs. When you toggle from low beam to high beam instead of increase the illumination of the road you have the opposite effect because the low beam turns off and the high beam output light is very faint. This is a technical problem coming from the shape of the projector itself.
The other problem is that the low beam have almost no cut off, so when you install stronger bulbs you blind vehicles on the other side, unless you lower the beam aim. I installed the LED bulbs (illegal, no certificate of compliance for public use) the structure of the projector was again not able to build a good beam, the result was a lot of light everywhere around my bike but not deep enough to see the curves 200 meters from me, which is the real reason for have headlights. I then installed HID, being stronger than halogen bulbs and much more directional than current LED bulbs. The warm up phase of the HID, forced me to install them at low beam position. Now I can see better, the result is great and similar to full LED projector of the S, but I blind everybody and the HID kit has no "certificate of conformity" to be used on public street. So if I blind a police car, I'll get a fine!! I installed also LED fog lights to compensate the dark you have when you toggle on high beam and when you switch back to low beam and you need to wait the warm up phase of the HID.
It's not possible on the DVT to keep high and low beam lights on in parallel. The command belongs from the dashboard where there is no way to modify anything. The only solution is to route a cable from the battery to the bulbs and add another custom switch on the handle bar.
...again... I paid this bike 17700€ and I have to deal with this problem? No my friends, sorry but at that price I pretend at least the quality of the headlights of the previous MTS1200. With the poor Kayaba suspensions, which dive a lot during hard brake, the road becomes drastically dark also with HID bulbs.
I already reported all these issues several times to Ducati officially, writing them letters. They simply ignored me and they are keeping installing these projectors to all the MTS1200 DVT and 950, it's not kind. None of the magazine report the problem and I want to make people aware.
My intent is not to convince anybody about anything, I only want to share the information and help those bikers will be disappointed by these issues like I am.

  3. Hi All ,
I joined this forum and am going to be a proud owner of the new 950 mt ,But have just read the post from Desmo 09 about the fuel tanks and recalls already ,where does he get this info from

  4. Some new owners have been emailed to say their bike is delayed and she existing to advise of recall. Believe its a manufacturing fault, Ducati buy these not make them. Its only happened last week afaik :)

Ignore the negative stuff, if you like it, buy it :upyeah:

  5. Hi,
put you chassis number here and verify if your bike is under recall campaign:
    Ducati

Enjoy your bike anyway, hope you will not suffer the issues it's gonna have!

  6. I wouldnt know if it is under recall campaign as I havent got it yet till the mid of march

  7. If its not built yet, chances are its sat waiting for the new tank to be fitted.

  8. Many MTS950 and MTS1200 are on hold and many bike's delivery are delayed for this issue! @thenozzle: You will have a good tank... at least:tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:!

  9. Once again I agree that the lights are weaker than desirable but the front suspension dive is easily fixed by upping compression damping 3 clicks or so. I weigh 85kgs with gear and 3 clicks works fine for me. Dive is very much under control.

  10. I did probably 4 or 5 clicks and add some preload of the springs as well. I solved partially the issue because now the dive is reduced for normal brake, the dive comes back if I use to have a sport drive style and attempt to brake stronger than usual. Try to firmly pull the brake handle you will notice that the dive effect will be there. I can add more clicks but I fear the comfort in the cities will be lost and in Italy we have bad street in the cities. At night the combination of the dive effect plus the weak headlights led to the situation where you have for instance a long strait where you catch speed (the bike has 160HP remember) and you brake before a curve, it happened to me that I was not able to see enough in front of me in order to follow properly the curve. I know this and I bear in mind always, but I loose part of the fun of riding a bike costing me 17700€ and not good in every kid of usage I do.
I watched some review of the Pikes Peak and Holins do not suffer this although they are normal mechanic suspensions. The Kayaba are adjustable yes, but inside they are made cheap and they not have optimizations for high rate and low rate excursions that's way you fill the improvement adding clicks but if you stress a bit them the dive comes back.
By the way suspensions problem is the one concerns less me, it's an easy fix costing 500€ for a complete replacement of the cartridges. The headlights of these bikes it's the real problem since being the structure of the projector wrong and weak it's hard to improve the performance with any type/kind of bulb.
FULL LED is not an option since it's a CAN-BUS device and not easy to integrate, some bright engineers should work decoding and hacking the CAN-BUS in order to integrate it. This would be great!! I'm a computer engineer and I'm questing for somebody willing to team up with me and start this project but so far I found nobody.

  11. You know it's not a sports bike, right?! Dial the dive out and you'll be complaining it's uncomfortable on bumpy roads. You seem to be expecting the bike to be something it can never be.

That's why people buy skyhook: flick a button and it's more sports, flick back and it's soft and wallowy:upyeah:

  12. ...as I said suspensions is an easy fix costing 500€.
The weak headlights is the real problem affected by the suspensions' dive effect!

  13. I think we get it now. Your endless complaining benefits no one

  14. Can't see changing the headlight a major problem, it's been done by lots of people on the panigale , changing the standard lights on the 899 to led ones off the 1199s , only a simple wiring job, sure all modern ducatis run canbus.

  15. Sounds to me like someone didn't do their homework and failed buy the right model to suit the intended use.

  16. He's actually correct that the LED lights from the S cannot be upgraded onto the base 1200. The control module for that is integrated into the dash (which is different on the S).

But I do think that a good pair of Denali's or similar quality lights will fix the issue largely. And I completely agree on the suspension. The Ohlins have less compliance and travel compared to the base 1200. That's a fair trade-off.

Be positive Desmo! It's a good platform. Ask people who have been riding other bikes like me. [emoji1] My only complaint is that the bike rattles a lot compared to the build quality of Harleys. But those are heavy metal monster with a different charm.

  17. A correct attitude to take, well done member....

  18. I've never been thrilled with the DVT led headlights. The low beam is good but the high beam is no fun at all. There would be little to gain by retrofitting the led unit anywhere.
As said above, a good pair of aux lights will make an excellent high beam. A pair of Baja Designs XL Pro will turn night into day.
A high price on a motorcycle in no way means you will get good headlights

  19. condescending

  20. Condescending, what the accused or the accuser??
Sticks and stones mate, sticks and stones, just get your headlights fettled so you can see where your throwing those sticks and stones.......

Just one question before I leave this forum and stay on the ST forum (where logic prevails).

Do you think your superior attitude is some sort of physiological reaction to owning an inferior motorcycle?
