Watch Buying Advice.

  1. Hi all,

    As per title,

i have for a long time hankered after a "proper" watch, and my business is doing very well,so thought i'd treat myself, i have a budget of 10k.

Currently got my eye on a very nice "panerai luminor marina"...so my question for the watch people on here (i know there are a few of you) is....do they hold their value, and/or can they increase in value if so what make to go for and what to steer away from, any advice would be appreciated.

    Greg

  2. Go over to TZUK and have a search/decent read for a wide range of opinions.

  3. Oh, and post a pic of what you buy. Panerai is one watch brand I don't currently own.

  4. ok thanks, i will pay them a visit ....ive aways wanted a panerai really like the luminor 1950

  5. Are you buying to wear or as an investment?
Some pani's increase though tend to be the limited releases (black seals, 45's, Ferrari) tend to stay static.
Like em or loathe em I've yet to lose on a steel sports Rolex, avoid golds/two tones as they tank.
If your lucky you may get one of the last Daytonas before they introduced the Cerachrome. They seem to be going up well at the moment.
Non date sub would be a solid investment as would a Pepsi.
Buy right and you'll make more on your wrist than in the bank.
Pateks can be very on trend so prices move accordingly (and at ten k your not in the right area for rarities)
Avoid AP Royal Oaks if your looking to get at least your stake returned ( this I learnt the hard way).
Fashion brands such as Omega don't increase as a rule and you'll have lost 30% by the time you've left the jewellers door.
Iwc is in your price band, I've a few of those as well but whilst they aren't loosing it's really the steel Rolexes that are increasing above everything else mainstream.
Add another nought and you can get into some serious returns, but equally some serious risk :)

  6. Buying to wear, and enjoy ownership, but always easier to 'sell' the idea of doing a few grand on a watch to the wife if second hand value won't bomb.
i love the style of the panerai's,simple and classic.

  7. Definitely avoid the fashion brands unless you're unconcerned with resale.

Not really my thing stylewise but Rolex is the bricks and mortar brand. I've got a Zenith and a Breitling, I love them both but neither were purchased as an investment.

  8. Maybe go for a Pam 90 and keep the rest in the bank, you'll see most of what you paid for it back in a couple of years and had the pleasure of wearing it.
Word of warning, Panerai straps become addictive!

  9. Why is that?

  10. I have a lovely little Panerai 1950 flyback myself, along with a hublot oceanographic, bell & Ross br02-94 and an omega speedmaster meteorite, didn't buy as an investment, have them as I have a penchant for automatic watches. The Pani is probably the "plainest" of the lot, a little retro but a great timepiece in its own right. Good luck with your search.

  11. Buffalo, Stingray, Cowhide,Rubber.
Then they bring them out in alternative colours...

If my wife ever says anything, she wins on shoes... :)

  16. I said to my missus, I like red but you can't see it on the soles of them shoes! She's having non of it!!

  17. Or a
Rolex deep sea sea dweller blue, like rocking horse poo :)

  18. Owned a number of "nice" watches in the past. I've always done the best with Rolex.

About 12 years ago I bought Rolex Sea Dweller 16600 £2,100 new. Wore it every day for 7 years, then gave it a proper service and case refinish. Sold if for £4,200 within 24hr of listing it for sale. Now selling for £5,500 plus.

As others have said, I've never lost on the right Rolex.

Buy the stainless steel sports watches, buy them to wear, knowing if you buy right, you will get your money back.

The right model, second hand Rolex, will always be worth 60 to 70% the price of a new one. When the list on new ones increase, so does the value of the used ones.

As much as it's nice to buy a new one, I'd suggest buying a used one. Save about 20 to 35% on the price of a new one. The minute list prices go up, you will be making money.

If you buy new, it will take 2 or 3 list price increases before you can sell it and get your money back.

Stainless steel, sports watch are the most desirable, and therefore saleable. Avoid bi metal, over fancy dress straps, dress watches etc

Currently wear a Deepsea 116660, bought a 1 year old model from a Rolex dealer, all paper work, box etc. Paid £4,000, List price is now £8,900, used prices are £5,750 to £7,000.
