Ok, so asking this question is maybe going to be a little one sided being a ducati forum but if you had a choice between a rc30 or an 1098R which would you choose ? Same price of £17000 , the rc vgc , the R immaculate and less mileage? Would be used for weekend light riding and looking at ! Thoughts ? I prefer the R looks but like the history of the rc . Rides totally different of course but that's not really a bother.
I have just voted with my wallet for a 1098R. Have 17 bikes, 6 of which are Ducati's - none of which are Honda's I would have bought an Rc30/45 if I had chance years ago but feel I missed the boat - they have already increased 4 fold. 1098R's I nearly missed the boat as they bottomed out 2 years ago. But I stretched myself to bag one this year They go better and look better and will increase in value stronger from now in comparison in my view
What's the general thoughts on prices for these ? I thought it was in the £14's maybe a bit more for a dealer of course. £17 seems a bit salty to me but maybe that's me and what the market is at ?
Early ('88) RC30s seem to make more than the later ('90) model. A quick search found half a dozen for sale, all £20k and above. The UK spec 1098R didn't come with a set of race end cans but most of the Rs that have sold recently all seemed to have the 70mm system. If your R has any "modifications" make sure the seller still has the original bits. Valve clearance check at 7.5k miles potentially is not a cheap service. If you need shims changing, anything up to and around £1k depending on if both heads need doing. Belts get changed at 15k miles/2 years. Never ridden an NC30 so can't comment although I'd imagine that the V4 is just as complicated and expensive to service. 1098R is a fabulous, shouty brute of an animal that is seriously quick with superb handling. If you choose the R, you will be amongst friends with I think 26 already owned by forum members although 4 or 5 are not based in the UK. Both have a certain cache to the cognacenti both have their advocates. Give me a 1098R any day, oh yes nearly forgot, I've already got one . Andy
The last two sold by MR, one September time last year and one a short while ago, went for between £15500 and £16000 with around 6k miles. The one currently on sale at DMC is up for £16995 but has yet to sell. Private sale take off the cost of a service and look at tyres and clutch plates. Any hard use, the clutch basket and plates could need replacing after 6500 miles. Andy
Doesn't make you controversial, the RC30 was a game changer in 1988. On a Ducaticentric forum I would expect the majority of the people expressing an opinion to prefer the 1098R which was a game changer in its own right 20 years on from the Honda. I'll still be your friend . Andy
For the first time this year I rode the R properly today ... ... nothing rubs a mans rhubarb like this bike ! .. just saying like
