The SSD in an iPod fails over time. It is possible to run diagnostics on it to work out the rate at which it is failing. :Angelic:
An actual Ipod as opposed to the Ipod Touch uses a 1.8" hard disk drive. Like any drive it will fail over time. Depending on whether you use Windows or a Mac will determine where your Itunes library is situated in a directory on your PC hard drive. It also depends on what version of windows you use. Itunes also uses a system to catalogue the files (tunes and albums) that makes it hard to figure out what the tunes or albums are. The easiest thing to do is either backup the whole library as it is and then keep or transfer it for further use in Itunes or if you want to transfer the files in an intelligible manner to a hard drive then use a program like Iexplorer, which will allow you to transfer the contents of an Ipod directly to a backup drive. It is possible for a 5th generation Ipod, at least, to convert it to use a compact flash drive. It is also possible to alter the size of the drive depending on what size compact drive you use. http://download.cnet.com/iExplorer/3000-2141_4-10969335.html If you check this site you will find that various other software can also be downloaded to facilitate the same. The original Ipod is making a comeback at the moment, particularly the 5th Generation model. I recently bought seven of them as a bulk buy on eBay as they were all not working. To date I have revived five including one of the enhanced 5.5 generation models which were in the batch, which is the most sought after. All parts are available if you search eBay or online shops. So if you have a failing Ipod you can resurrect it. Tools to open the Ipod "spudgers" ! are also available very cheaply. I have just finished a custom version for my partner based on the U2 Red\Black version and she has noted the difference in sound playback increased quality compared to her phone and tablet.
I have three iPod Classic 6th Gen. Fabulous piece of kit. I keep getting them repaired as they fail, which they do over time.
What no red? nooooooo, I think they reserve red ones just for direct sales from apple or their stores? The new-ish pod is a gen 5 itouch using windows as the machine
My iTunes is on Windows XP Reading a post above my PC has since been upgraded in memory and such like and I think my playlist for the pink one is gone Which means I need to put the tunes in the pod to something else That's where I end in PC knowledge :Bookworm:

Old post i know but looking for inspiration -are you still successfully doing these changes to old ipods?
I have not had the need to do them for a while but I still have parts and tools and now have 4 ipods after selling a few off for a small profit.
Spotify for me. It got me listing to more music then ever before and introduced me to lots of new music, it caters for all tastes. Features like discover weekly and the radio have let me to descover lots of new and old music. You can also share playlists and music with Friends, this was particularly useful at my wedding, I just shared playlists with the venue. I used it with my Sonos system at home, which works and sounds brilliant. It’s also integrated into my Car’s infotainment system and my phones satnav (Waze), which makes listening to music on the go very easy.
