The 848 Wheelie Issue

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by slinky848, Apr 6, 2017.

  1. ok, cant find the topic i presume that already will cover this, que @Exige

i had heard the 848's have some kind of widget going on that in 1st and 2nd gear when dropping the clutch, would stop wheelies in some kind of manor.

I am actually asking about somthing slightly different.

again in 1st and 2nd gear, pulling away harsh enough to lift the front wheel, every so often the bike comes out of gear into some kind of semi neutral state, to the point i can hear grinding of gears, but have no acceleration under throttle, it does not settle once the fronts down, i have to reingage the gear and go again.

any tips, no hows or views on this?

  6. ok i see,

but surly once its in a gear thats it?

how sure would you feel that with the issue explained the gear dogs would be the culprit?

i was presuming it was anti wheelie related due to it not doing it when keeping the front wheel down. no matter the rev range i used

  7. I know nothing about anti wheelie(I'm old and mechanical) but when the gear dogs become worn(big power/wheelies don't help) the gears don't mesh completely and can slip when stressed, lower gears are usually the victims and need replaced in matched pairs,my rgv(and most rgv,s) done it,an easy fix on the rgv as its got a cassette g/box which slides out,I don't know about the new dukes but on my ones it's a engine out, wallet out kinda time!

  8. ok, any way to test and check before soending lots of money. the bikes in warrenty, i think they might fix it but i would need to be sure

  9. Careful how you report to the garage 'so once the front wheel is properly up and I snick it into 2nd pointing skyward....."

  10. If it's still under warranty take it back(probably best not to mention wheelies) and get them to investigate it asap

On the subject of wheelies, does your oil light come on if you hold the bike up for any length of time,my 851 shows the light and starts pumping sump oil into the airbox,if the modern dukes still do this clean your a/box before going about warranty work(they always look for a way out)

  11. i will just point out,

i do not changed gear when the wheels up, im not that confident yet.

ive got the front up maybe 10times. 8 of those were in first.

and about 4of those in first the bike poped out of gear when the front got high enough for me to possibly lift off, but i cant say im sure i did (i just go with it and my hands almost subconsciously decide throttle [emoji33])

does this still sound like transmission?

does anyone know a costing to having 848 gear dogs replaced?

  14. Take it to the dealer, tell them you think it comes out of gear under hard acceleration. See what they say - go from there.

They'll probably test ride it, then tell you whether they think you will get it done under warranty. If they don't think you will, they'll give you an estimate of how much it is going to cost, but are not going to do any work without your say-so

  15. ok will do, like most things in mechanics, theres always a few possabilitys.

are there any other diagnosis' that this could end up being?

could a badly assembled dry clutch be a culprit?

or simply, its the transmission, nothing else would take it out of gear like that (presuming im putting it into gear correctly)

  16. Clutch would cause slip rather than clunk, and would regain traction properly when torque is reduced.

  17. It definitely sounds like a transmission problem, some bikes can find a false neutral at times ( mine does) but a firm gear change always prevents this happening on my bike.
Your bike doesn't have a quickshifter by any chance that might need adjusting?
I'm not aware of your widget kind of thing preventing wheelies, some newer bikes with have electronic wheelie control.

  18. thing is, when i roll on the power very slightly softer, but then into full throttle later on in the gear (basicly not lifting the front) its not done it once that way.

tool it for a good 50 mile hard 'lap of my town' journey yesturday. it happened only once, and the one time it dud the front was up. there are times the front is up and it doesnt do it.

(sorry for wanting to be sure sure as i can be in this)

  19. i heard the 848 ecu or somthing stops clutch wheelies in 1st and 2nd, ive never tried to do one so i dont know how it works or how it feels, i dont want to wheelie, i want to accelerate fast, but the front comming up under power is fun

  20. Stop doing wheelies. Problem solved.

Serious - your dealership reads this and they will be doing 0 waranty work.
