Hi I think I've got a crack in the stator cover of my 01 748 and was wondering if it's interchangeable with any other years or models. Lots of 749 covers on eBay but not many 748s. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks
Don't want to worry you unnecessarily but a cracked stator cover can indicate main bearing failure, movement in the crank can cause cracking to the casing around the outer bearing. Where abouts is the crack. Steve
Steve! Why would you be so mean! Thanks for the advice though. But I think it was self inflicted. Because I'm an idiot I thought it was a good idea to pull the cover from the engine with one of the bolts still in. I didn't realise at the time that I'd damaged it but think now that I have. Feel free to roll your eyes and tut. I'd say I deserve it
Pleased it wasn't more serious then, your bike will have the later three phase stator I presume so the early ones won't fit, sorry I don't know if any others will fit. Steve
Be careful what you get. A guy tried my spare 907ie cover that looked like it would fit his 748 but the crank sensor was a couple of mm out and it wouldnt work.
There are at least 2 different 3-phase covers and they are not interchangeable. The difference is mountings for the crank sensors.
If it's just cracked and due to pulling against a bolt and not from dodgy bearings etc. then it maybe weldable?
No it was one of the bolts at the top near the frame. It looks like oil is seeping out just above the crank sensor probe. So I'm assuming that's the one I geniusly neglected
If the crack is not too bad it is possible to use a product named Devcon which is designed for casing repair to machinery. I have repaired a couple of Ducati side casings using this. I also used to use it a lot to repair TZ Yamaha race engines that were internally scored after dropping a big end bearing which used to result in grooving of the cases in the rod area. As no welding is required it eliminates the worry of possible case distortion. If you buy it make sure it is suitable for Aluminiuim as there are different types and it is designed to have the same co-efficient of expansion as alloy. The last time I used it eBay were selling for around £30. It does have a shelf life and also check to see that the product is "in date". ITW Devcon | Devcon Brand Aluminum Putty (F)
